Because that's completely objective.
Music quality is entirely subjective, however I think talent can be measured objectively somewhat. So that's where we differ. Quote:
Technical skill is in itself a talent, therefore it makes you talented to a degree. To compose a great melody is entirely subjective, sure writing a catchy melody ain't easy for anybody, however I think it takes a lot more talent to make a complex and catchy melody than a simple and catchy melody. You can not like say The Beatles or Stevie Wonder, but to say they're talentless is objectively wrong. Quote:

I'd retort and prove all your points wrong, but you know as well as I do that you are, and are just arguing for the sake of it, so I'm going to leave it at that.

Good points Boo boo, but Comus was referring his complaints in how people often will rate an album highly simply because the people involved in it are "talented", rather than rating it honestly based upon the actual content of the music. Take ELP's stuff post Brain Salad Surgery for example, or any of Transatlantic's albums; the players involved are all certainly talented, but there is a serious absence of novelty in the compositions.
Of course, the opposite is certainly true as well; Gentle Giant was a rediculously high-density melting pot of talent, and their first six or seven albums reflect that talent phenomenally.

You know when you meet someone for the first time and all they do is talk about themselves and the possessions they own and how many women they have slept with? I get the same feeling with Dream Theatre. I just want to smash the fuck out of their smug but deluded little faces.

By the way, I wish i could still say I had never heard Dream Theatre before... but what's worse...I found a free cd I got in Classic Rock magazine and it has a Dream Theatre track call 'Constant Motion' & they sound like theyre ripping metallica off big time, infact theres quite a few bands on this cd that sound like theyre ripping off metallica, theres also another **** band which I must declare as being 'Dragonforce'- the sound of constant drum machines and really crap vocals and cheesy choruses. Only Iron Maiden can do this & get away with it (IMO). Trivium are another guilty member of the 'Metallica Imitators/Rip Off Merchants' club. Other **** bands on this record include Oli Brown who sounds like some kind of ****ing James Morrisson meets ZZ Top **** up, The Erotics- really cheesy shallow bubble rock reminiscent of the likes of Twisted Sister and co, Practically everything on this album sucks apart from Megadeth's new track 'Sleepwalker' & Joe Bonamassa's Woke Up Dreaming(Live)'. Another one that deserves a mention is John 5 with a track called 'Sounds Of Impalement'- reminds me of Joe Satriani. Also there is another 'sh1tebag' who sounds like a complete rip off of Ian Gillan called Richie Kotzen. I cant believe I not only have this cd, but to have so much crap and **** all on one disc can only warrant a suitable snap in half. At least I didnt pay for it, wouldnt have bought compilations anyway. Anyway for anyone who is wondering what the hell this mystery cd is heres a link with all the tracklisting from it (on the right hand side): Guitarmageddon! by Various Artists - Books / Magazines - Classic Rock : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music Yeah you get the just of it, its more about the technicality, I mean if theres a **** band that are **** players as well such as Sex Pistols for instance then fair enough.
