It's Alternative Rock week!
Alternative Rock has of course meant a number of things over the years. In the 1980's it would be used to define a number of artists who offered an alternative to the commercial charts and would make good use of things like college radio and independent record labels to promote their music.
Today the term Alternative Rock is probably most widely used as an umbrella term for rock music that does not typically follow current trends or mainstream culture, regardless of the level of commercial success and rather than to describe a specific sound. Wiki RYM |

I can already see that this week will make me go back to bands I haven't listened in a long time.
Meat Puppets - 'Two Rivers' (Up on the Sun, 1985) One of my favorite Meat Puppets songs Violent Femmes - 'Kiss Off' Ah, nostalgia Afghan Whigs - 'Retarded' (Up In It, 1990) I haven't listened to this band in such a long time that I forgot they existed. Sebadoh - 'Scars, Four Eyes' (III, 1991) The Breeders - 'Glorious' (Pod, 1990)

Me too! It was a sad day when those went away. But I guess the environment is important too.
