It's Alternative Rock week!
Alternative Rock has of course meant a number of things over the years. In the 1980's it would be used to define a number of artists who offered an alternative to the commercial charts and would make good use of things like college radio and independent record labels to promote their music.
Today the term Alternative Rock is probably most widely used as an umbrella term for rock music that does not typically follow current trends or mainstream culture, regardless of the level of commercial success and rather than to describe a specific sound. Wiki RYM |
Broad week this be.

when i think of "Alternative" i definatly think of "MTVs 120 Minutes" and the 90s....for me at least....my favorites of that time
Teenage Fanclub - The Concept...this entire album is a gem The Ocean Blue - Ballerina Out Of Control...still amazing song Urge Overkill - Sister Havana.....crazy they are so underrated Camper Van Beethoven - Take The Skinheads Bowling...."i had a dream i wanted to lick you knees" They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng....such found memories with this song and album (seriously this song is amazing) Jane's Addiction...i always enjoyed Nothings Shocking to the other two albums |
The 90s! |

hey does anybody else remember the big cardboard boxes that cd's came in so they would have comparable album art work to vinyl?....i used to hang all the cover art all over my room..... |
'Alternative' is a pretty broad term as it can cover a wide range of music. But here's a few tracks that come to mind
|
This thread can go in all kinds of directions - alternative is such a vast genre!
The claymation video is awesome. |
I can already see that this week will make me go back to bands I haven't listened in a long time.
Meat Puppets - 'Two Rivers' (Up on the Sun, 1985) One of my favorite Meat Puppets songs Violent Femmes - 'Kiss Off' Ah, nostalgia Afghan Whigs - 'Retarded' (Up In It, 1990) I haven't listened to this band in such a long time that I forgot they existed. Sebadoh - 'Scars, Four Eyes' (III, 1991) The Breeders - 'Glorious' (Pod, 1990) |

Lemonheads - Into Your Arms.....i swear this thread is becoming a mix tape i made for some beautiful girl....that then turn into a Cure/Joy Division mixtape i made for myself Swervedriver - Duel....this is nothing short than amazing |
^^I have totally forgotten about Lemonheads...and how beautiful Evan Dando is
Here's more from me. Let's go to Paisley Underground for a moment. I love those bands and their special type of alternative rock mixed with psychedelia and folk. The Dream Syndicate - 'Halloween' (The Days of Wine and Roses, 1982) This whole album is just perfect! Thin White Rope - 'Wet Heart' (Moonhead, 1987) This song is killing me, that's all I have to say. Rain Parade - 'This Can't Be Today' (Emergency Third Rail Power Trip, 1983) Beautiful Opal - 'Soul Giver' (Happy Nightmare Baby, 1987) This is what Pink Floyd would sound like if they were an 80s alternative rock band. Interesting facts about Opal: the band was born from The Dream Syndicate and Rain Parade and later gave birth to Mazzy Star. |
Thanks to Burning Down for posting the Pylon song. Hotdamn! I loved that band. I saw them in the 80s and they were a ferocious beast of a live band. Human Body was my favorite song by them & I've embedded it below.
The Bush Tetras were another band I absolutely adored and saw several times in the early 80s. My favorite band of that era was Mission of Burma who I've seen live at least 150 times because I lived in Boston when they were gigging in local clubs around 5-10 times a month during 1980 & 1983. I saw every local show they ever did including their first & last ones. This video of Trem Two is from their last Boston show at ballroom of the Bradford Hotel in 1983. |
Little late, but I gotta say for all the enthusiasm of page 1, page 2 was the end? Hahaha. Here's some things that didn't get attention in case more people swing by...
Silversun Pickups Silversun Pickups - Three Seed <---click here Highly recommend Three Seed as one of the best off the album, but oft not mentioned. Ataxia f. John Frusciante and friends... Ataxia - Dust<--- click here Beck Quote:

Hell yeah to alternative rock! especially the music from the 90s!
I cannot post youtube videos cos I'm at work but here's a list: Live - Selling The Drama... or anything from the brilliant Throwing Copper! The Cranberries - Zombie Smashing Pumpkins - Hummer / Soma / Mayonaise Radiohead - Airbag....... anything from Bends or OK Duncan Sheik - Wishful Thinking from Great Expectations OST (I love this song! Does it qualify?) Breeders - Cannonball Weezer - Anything from the blue album Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Kill Your Television |
Well we could post virtually anything in here with a guitar. Here are a few ditties that I like.
Should have been bigger. They are British but don't sound like it at all. I like her vocals even though they have been treated and the geek on drums adds minus cool points. A classic with the lovely Katie Jane Garside (Queen Adreena). |
