If you break it down most of metal is pretty cheesy. I think KIMB, Peace Sells, and RIP are good enough to solidify Megadeth as the best band on this list.

Metallica were just as cheesy but tended to know hot to distribute their musicianship over more songs than Megadeth. With the exception of Peace Sells, and Rust in Peace, almost every Megadeth album forces you to sort through 50%+ crap to get to the best songs. Sure their best songs were better than Metallica's best songs, but you couldn't trust Mustaine for solid albums in comparison.
Slayer, on the other hand, knew how to be cheesy in the right way. They knew that they were marketing to thrash metal audience, and wrote songs about sheer horrifying violence. They knew their audience was pissed off teenagers, and early twenty-something males who were pissed off, and wanted angry music. They didn't pussyfoot with themes that are Sammy Hagarish(yeah, like 502 doesn't feel like a tacky "I can't drive 55" knockoff). With Slayer you expected blood and death, and during their prime, they did not disappoint.

1. Slayer
My favorite out of the mix. You just can't beat the Kerry King's chaotic guitar solos, Jeff Hanneman's excellent rhythm, Dave Lombardo's thunderous yet technical drumming, and Tom Araya's shouted lyrics and great bass plucking. In my opinion Seasons in the Abyss is their greatest album because it has a lot of variety unlike Reign in Blood where most of the riffs sound the same. 2. Metallica They're a close second. The only reason they are #2 is because (and I know people hate this term) they sold out. My two favorite albums by them are a tie; Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Both fantastic albums and a fantastic band. 3. Megadeth Still really great. I love the album Rust in Peace. Great guitar work and decent vocals. 4. Anthrax To be honest, I don't know much about this band, and I haven't heard much of them. But what I have heard of them was not fantastic. |

Slayer for me. They were my first Metal band that I got into, I started with Seasons In The Abyss and went from there, and that probably shaped where I went in terms of what Metal I looked for and listen to (I like mostly Death Metal and Black Metal). Slayer are the benchmark that I measure other bands by, the prototype for my personal tastes.

I seriously love Megadeth and Anthrax. Seriously, both bands changed the way I view music. Megadeh showed me that being incredibly pissed off could be a good thing, and Antrax showed me that metal could be very geeky and funny. Love these bands.
Metallica I also seriously enjoy, and they introduced me to all heavy music with their Black Album. And I seriously couldn't care less if they "sold out," I enjoy Some of their lighter fare as well. But I have played the hell out of them, and have gotten somewhat sick of hearing them. I'll still listen to them every once in awhile on purpose, but most of my Metallica listing nowadays is relegated to when my brother plays them. Slayer, I honestly don't listen to a lot of. They're good, but I find the fake satanic imagery redicilous. |
