I don't think they are going to be ground breaking, that era of music has been and gone. Everyone has pushed their creativity to the very edge, I don't think anyone can push it any further. But that isn't a bad thing. So what, things aren't going to be fresh and innovative. People will still use their influence and we'll hear it in older artists, bands' influences will be evident and we'll say "oh, they're reminiscent of ....." and that's a great thing. I can't wait to see what the 10s will bring. I hope it's not a load of generic synth pop.

There seems to be a few synth pop bands coming thick and fast at the moment. A banned called Delphic appeared.. Dunno if you know them. They might be good, but from what I heard they just sounded like every other synth pop band. Bland and boring.

I like Goldfrapp and Daft Punk, at least their earlier material.

But yeah synth pop is really watered down now.

But even of the modern artists that I like, I can't think of any that are as groundbreaking as tons of acts from previous decades. I can't even think of any that are as groundbreaking as Nirvana were in the 90s and it's not like Nirvana were the most original band in the world.
I would say that stems from the way that we view music in retrospect. It's generally pretty hard to tell that a band is groundbreaking until many years after the fact when you can actually look at them in the larger perspective of the narrative of music history.

Weren't Goldfrapp Trip-Hop? Or am I thinking of something else. I really don't like Trip-Hop. One Genre I just don't get.

But yeah, we need another garage rock revival!

This is how I always thought about it. I've said it before, but there is plenty of good music coming out these days. I'm sure some of it will be considered highly in the following years.

Haha another genre you don't get, eh? Every time you say things like this I get the urge to try to get you into it as much as I can. What trip hop have you heard? There is actually quite a variety out there.

It's only Prog rock I dislike, and Trip-Hop I don't get.. I think those are the only genres really.

Urm, Gorillaz, Portishead, Bjork (even though she differs from trip-hop, but there's definitely some there.), couple of others that I can't remember.

No Massive Attack? Portishead would admittedly be hard to "get" for trip hop newbs...Gorillaz and Bjork are not trip hop. If you are up to it check out Mezzanine by Massive Attack. If that does anything for you we can talk more in the trip hop thread.
