Slayer vs Metallica

SLAAAAAAAYER!
Hahahaha, you ever hear someone yell that at a concert where Slayer isn't even playing? I have, at like every ****in concert I go to. |
I gotta go with Slayer.
I love them both. But I'm rather tired of the hype around Metallica, like everyone is expected to like them and its the favorite band of all hobby rockers running around. And frankly I think they have gotten abit tired over the years. I prefer the old metallica. Slayer on the other hand, never gets old. |
Slayer, easily. Once upon a time Metallica were a great band, but even their very best album (Master of Puppets IMO) can't touch Slayer at their peak (Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss). And let's face it, Dave Lombardo kicks Lars Ulrich's ass six ways from Sunday.
|
Metallica have been one of the most groundbreaking metal acts ever and always pushing the envelope with new ideas....some good some bad. Their early albums are essential to any metal collection with their dynamics and progressive metal elements. Despite all this, there is actually no competition and Slayer win hands down!!! For me they have always symbolized what metal is all about and they`ve made little compromise over the years but have still stayed modern. As Janszoon says, Lombardo can kick Ullrich`s ass anytime and James Hetfield just doesn`t have the aggression of Tom Araya.

I have to abstain from voting because I love both bands for different reasons, it's to easy to dismiss Metallica cause they're more mainstream and their drummer is "****". Bull**** if any of you say you didn't discover Slayer by way of Metallica.
|
As big of a Metallica fan that I am, I have to say Slayer. They really kick your ass, and they just ****ing rule. Metallica is good, but Slayer kicks it up a notch.
And Metallica doesn't suck, you might say they are **** or overrated, but they are a great band, and you know it. You know who you are. |
I have to say Slayer I dislike Metallica and Reign In Blood is a fantastic album.
|
Why isn't this poll Metallica vs. Megadeth?
I choose Megadeth. |

Slayer > Metallica > Megadeth War Ensemble...Game Over Although I've got most of Megadeth's discography, I just don't enjoy their stuff. Countdown To Extinction was a great album though. |

Alright.
Slayer and Metallica are both pretty important in my opinion. Both, Slayer and Metallica, were early on the Thrash Metal scene. Both bands have produced very good albums, both bands have produced mediocre albums, and both bands have produced bad albums. Those things being said I grow tired of both bands quickly nowadays. Overall though, I think Slayer is the better of the two. I like the more aggressive music they make. In terms of skill, both bands lack a 'good' vocalist, imo. Metallica gets bass between having had Cliff and Rob (I didn't think Jason was a great vocalist, but there is really no way to know because the bass on AJ4A was hard to hear?). Drums obviously Slayer with Dave. In terms of guitar, eh both bands lack so not really going to judge here. |

Slayer > Megadeth >>>>>>> Metallica Megadeth owns man |

To put it in a correct perspective of the big 4 thrash bands of the day:
Slayer>Megadeth>Metallica>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Anthrax |

The rest isn't very good... eh. But I really can't decide on this one... Gonna go with Slayer though. Reign in Blood is like the holy grail of Thrash. imo. |

Slayer.

I'll admit I don't know much about either band (relative to you guys, at least), but I do really like what Metallica I've heard.
|
if it weren't for Metallica most people today wouldn't know who Slayer is.
|
^I agree. Actually without Metallica most people probably wouldn't know anything about metal. Well, that's probably not right because bands like Black Sabbath get airplay and normally act as a 'gateway' band for a lot of people. I agree though that many people become interested in metal because of Metallica.
|
Two different bands. Slayer still stay close to their roots and have a much purer sound but Metallica still did more in 3 years than Slayer have done in 25 years.
Everything changed when Cliff died for Metallica and I genuinely believe that they could have been the greatest metal band on the planet and still influenced countless bands. In terms of staying within a particular sound and defining it then Slayer win hands down. As for shaping Metal and really twisting the genre on the head then Metallica WERE the band. |

Most people I knew thought it was a step backwards. |
Slayer makes music to headbang to.
Metallica makes music to torture war prisoners to. |

As for the bulk being written by Burton: he certainly underpinned their sound with melody and wrote many parts as oppose to complete tracks but Dave Mustaine wrote a shedload of stuff for Kill 'Em All and some parts on Ride The Lightning too. It has even been said that a couple of riffs on Master Of Puppets were his too. |
So tough because I love them both but I say Metallica.

but slayer still has my vote |

Had Megadeth been on the list, that's where my vote would have gone. Since they're not, well .. Although Metallica do not have a spotless career, I do think they have better albums and better songs than Slayer.
So Metallica it is! |

Slayer.

What's the point of this thread if we have a "best of big 4" thread?

Best of all, my bike is red and I was wearing some girlie-type bike jersey... nothing metal about me. I was all, "How did he know?" |

Jackhammer said it best, two different species of toasters people.
Personally, Slayers overall sound is what I like, the guitars are magnificent on most of their albums, clean and crisp delivered with pace. Tom Araya is the better vocalist in my opinion. However, Metallica have written way better songs, in enough numbers to form better albums. For example Ride the Lightening is genius. |
Metallica by a mile
