^I agree. Actually without Metallica most people probably wouldn't know anything about metal. Well, that's probably not right because bands like Black Sabbath get airplay and normally act as a 'gateway' band for a lot of people. I agree though that many people become interested in metal because of Metallica.

Two different bands. Slayer still stay close to their roots and have a much purer sound but Metallica still did more in 3 years than Slayer have done in 25 years.
Everything changed when Cliff died for Metallica and I genuinely believe that they could have been the greatest metal band on the planet and still influenced countless bands. In terms of staying within a particular sound and defining it then Slayer win hands down. As for shaping Metal and really twisting the genre on the head then Metallica WERE the band.

I actually feel the Metallica's death Magnetic was more of a return to there roots.

It has even been said that a couple of riffs on Master Of Puppets were his too.
