^I agree. Actually without Metallica most people probably wouldn't know anything about metal. Well, that's probably not right because bands like Black Sabbath get airplay and normally act as a 'gateway' band for a lot of people. I agree though that many people become interested in metal because of Metallica.

Two different bands. Slayer still stay close to their roots and have a much purer sound but Metallica still did more in 3 years than Slayer have done in 25 years.

Everything changed when Cliff died for Metallica and I genuinely believe that they could have been the greatest metal band on the planet and still influenced countless bands.

In terms of staying within a particular sound and defining it then Slayer win hands down. As for shaping Metal and really twisting the genre on the head then Metallica WERE the band.

I actually feel the Metallica's death Magnetic was more of a return to there roots.

Agreed. I've always heard that Cliff wrote the bulk of the music for Metallica's early albums. How much of this is true and rumour I couldn't tell you.

I will say that In Justice For All however was a hell of a disappointing album compared to the first three, thus it doesn't suprise me that they hooked up with Bob Rock afterwards and went commercial. Perhaps the loss of Cliff Burton hurt them more than we know.

"...and Justice For All" is often seen by most fans as the creative highpoint of the band along with the preceding album "Master of Puppets" It was let down though with its production on the bass parts. Bob Rock was brought in to help give that breakthrough the cd buying masses.

Really?

Most people I knew thought it was a step backwards.

Slayer makes music to headbang to.
Metallica makes music to torture war prisoners to.

Agreed. I remember when it came out. I even stood outside of the record store for half an hour before it opened to buy it and to this day I can barely listen to it. Over indulgent with an absolutely terrible production that deliberately dropped Newsted's bass parts as far down in the sound as possible (which the bands have admitted to since he left).

As for the bulk being written by Burton: he certainly underpinned their sound with melody and wrote many parts as oppose to complete tracks but Dave Mustaine wrote a shedload of stuff for Kill 'Em All and some parts on Ride The Lightning too. It has even been said that a couple of riffs on Master Of Puppets were his too.

So tough because I love them both but I say Metallica.
