Likewise Fred. See, the thing is I don't even disagree with all of what you're saying. I don't completely share your opinions but I was trying to stress that the points I was making, and some of the same points Big3 made, were based on what I see to be facts.

Now, if you want bring opinion into it I don't particularly enjoy Load or ReLoad, I absolutely despise St. Anger and I don't think anything Metallica released from AJFA onwards comes close to their 80s material. I don't hate any of it, but I'm nota dedicated fan of it either. If you don't enjoy this stuff then I think its valid to consider that they simply touched base with these genres that they experimented with rather than rooted themselves within any of them. It's a fair point, but it's all based on opinion and so is subjectivbe. What isn't, at least the way I see it, is that they did it. You know?

Anyway, I'm more a fan of Metallicas best material than Slayers best material but really, despite my posts over the last couple of pages, don't really wish to argue who is better. In their prime they were both great bands that made great music and thats good enough for me.

Metallica because they are my favorite band and they're not scared to think outside the box often, sometimes it pulls off, others it doesn't, but you have to give them respect. Slayer are also awesome, but they always do the same stuff, and it works and they are awesome but I prefer the bravery and live performance of Metallica and their music in general

What I should have said here is that it didn't sound like rap. Rap sounds like someone talking in a quick paced way, but that was singing, just at a different pace, but still very much sung. But rap? I don't hear it.

This debate is pretty good. I do believe what TheBig3 said is, if not all maybe partially correct, that some just want to seem more metal. Not that that is a bad thing, I suppose...

Definitely, and it started before that really. Seasons In The Abyss is very pop in a lot of ways. Lot's of catchy lyrics and riffs on Reign In Blood too. Same can easily be said about Metallica. They started doing a lot more with every album as well after Kill Em All. I'd just say that Slayer doing metal beats Metallica, and Slayer doing rock beats Metallica.

Metallica had melody and hooks in Kill 'Em All. That is one of the best reasons I love that album; metal meeting melody and hooks, which is the reason they are supposedly that big band that changed it all - not just thrash, I tell ya. You might not notice it if you're more into that raw metal sound, but it's definitely there. Like with Diabolus in Musica, Metallica always had that catchiness to their music. And that is probably why you do not like them.

I love raw energy, and I love catchy tunes, along with melody. It's too bad others do not so much, but that's why old Slayer is there; for those who aren't too into the mold that Metallica went for...

What? When I think of pop, I think of simple song structure meant to be catchy and easily digestible to a mass audience. This is kind of an open ended definition, but I wouldn't call Metallica's eighties or Slayer's material pop. Otherwise you're just talking about pop in the sense of music that isn't classical music.

I love Slayer, they are the one metal band that comes to mind that has sounded the same for 20+ years. On the other end if that I love Metallica because they can adapt to different genres. Who knows maybe Tom Araya has a beautiful voice and could do the same but I would rather not know.
