Many bands were highly influential to punk rock's evolution in sound, such as: The Who, The Sonics, The Monks, The Velvet Underground, MC5, New York Dolls, Iggy and the Stooges, and possibly The Kinks. Hell... I've seen people mention Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Woody Guthrie a few times.

Honestly, I feel this debate is just going in circles... The same bands and the same people keep being listed over and over again (it's not really going anywhere). Of course, I'm guilty of continuing it...
