That's cool. What I thought "the time" meant was '77-'79. A lot of people around me in the "real world" use that phrase in that not-so-direct fashion.

The Toy Dolls suffered a big humiliation by having their biggest hit a novelty one - "Nellie the Elephant" |
Yeah, they may be known for that song most. A novelty cover. But "Dig that Groove Baby" is a great album, that is fun to listen to.
Try not to get this song stuck in your head: Olga is also one of the most under appreciated guitarists in all of punk. Great guitarist. |

surprised this hasn't come up yet:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...JL._SS500_.jpg released in 1975. Even RateYourMusic lists this as the first punk album (do what you will with that, not written in stone) also features Ross the Boss, who would go on to play in Manowar. |

Hearing HDM on the radio trying to justify his legal action was a new kind of pathetic. |
just got a whole bunch of punk stuff from the "Best Punk Album" thread
i shall dissect each one to see where their influences come from |

The post was more to say I am surprised to see it has not been considered. Maybe it is not, but could play a part. As for the lawsuit, yeah that is pretty silly. But I do not know if I would say that has much effect on pop culture either. Caribou is hardly a household name that is on the tip of most peoples tongues himself. Has been or not, I think to people into the genre of punk, he has a claim to fame and I would rather look at what he did at the time than what he has or has not been now. |
I always thought it was Patti Smith and the stooges.

Del Shannon? think about it.....

My Generation by The Who is considered "the first rock song", Go Girl Crazy by The Dictators is considered the first punk rock album, and Ramones are considered the first punk rock band. So it's pretty hard to narrow down to who invented it.

It's just a combination of bad Glam rock & bad Pub Rock. Down By The Jetty by Dr Feelgood sounds more 'Punk Rock' than anything The Dictators did and came out earlier, The Ramones said they were influenced by it, so why not call that a punk rock album? |

but punk like an attitude? punk like a concept? punk like a tag in musical stiles? That's a big question guys..
|
I'd say Sex Pistols. They had the guts to sing about anarchism and violence, and other punk bands started following that trend. Sid Vicious would go on stage drunk as a skunk, and died of a heroin overdose. I'd say that set the punk stereotype about drugs and violence. But of course, Ramones DID have a more raw attitude than their precursors, but not AS raw as Sex Pistols.
|
I know that it's in the mind of the listener, so with me, the ones for me are The Stooges. They smashed a lot of rules, they made Sex Pistols look like an art project (A mighty fine art project), they made people wonder what the hell they were listening to - some possibly thought they were listening to Hell itself. They were from the streets of the Detroit area/Southeastern Michigan, The Pistols were mainly from the mind of a very clever Situationist/Boutique owner who was lucky to get a great lead vocalist and writer. The Stooges were the start of what is Punk in my opinion.
From the album that sparked a LOT of Punk scenes. The few kids who were sick of the FM Rock that was around rallied around Raw Power. This was too extreme for the Galm kids, too wild for a lot of people. More Stooges footage. |
You have a great point there. I Wanna be Your Dog is so heavily distorted I barely manage to listen to it. The Stooges is among the rawest bands I have heard of from back then. But this is pretty raw too.

Fair point. Apologies.

My biggest question and I know how heated these debates get but why? Who honestly gives a damn who invented it or started it. Music is music man enjoy it, listen to it, like what you like why does it really effect anything where it came from? Hell I don't know who invented my car, doesnt make it any less fun to drive.

I'm with US and Batlord, why even be on this forum if you don't want to discuss music. I accept that not every discussion will be interesting to every member, if a topic doesn't interest me I just move on to one that does.
As for comments on YouTube, they nearly always bug the holy livin' f*ck outta me so I generally ignore them. There's always gotta be trolls... |

Maybe The Saints invented punk. Their first single (I'm) Stranded came out a couple of months before Anarchy in the U.K. anyway
