READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY.
THE RAMONES formed in 1974
The Stooges first album was released AUGUST 5th 1969. I READ somewhere that The stooges wrote all the songs the day before they went into the studio.
THE BEATLES ABBEY ROAD ALBUM CAME OUT in SEPTEMBER. If the beatles didn't listen to the Stooges which I doubt they did from the weak albums sales. they created Punk music close to the same time with "Polythene Pam". The Beatles created almost every subgenre of rock before they where even known as genres.
Stooges created it slightly before Beatles but Beatles sent it into millions of peoples homes.
But you also can't say Velvet Underground started it either.
Velvet Underground + Stooges + Beatles + MC5 = THe true beginnings of Punk

The Beatles are the antithesis of punk.

Didn't Sex Pistols come years after the Ramones, and cite the as influences?

Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta declined the role for the same reason. When Al Pacino was considered for the role of John Rambo, he turned it down when his request that Rambo be more of a madman was rejected.
Al Pacino = God

Like most of these who invented "whatever genre" the argument can keep on going way back.

The two essential punk groups from the mid 70`s were the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.

The Doors, Velvet Underground, MC5, The Kinks, The Who, Rolling Stones etc and any other group with some type of attitude can be cited as an influence. In my opinion though, Iggy and the Stooges were probably the single most important influence on the genre.

In reference to antithesis, prog rock and the whole polished rock scene of the time, such as the Eagles and Supertramp etc were the antithesis of punk.

READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY.

The Deviants formed in 1967 and actually CALLED themselves a punk rock band at that time.
