All-time Best Rhythm Guitarist
I know most of you in this forum will disagree with me, but my alltime favorite rythm guitarist is James Hetfield(worst singer)
let me know your all-time favorite. |
Worst singer? You are crazy. I think the best Rhythm guitarist is the duo Janick Gers and Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden. They basically invented harmonizing with the guitar. Or it would Malcolm Young of AC/DC.

I didn't know what I would say when I clicked on this thread, but since you reminded me of Maiden I'll go with that. Janick Gers and Adrian Smith created some truly addicting guitar riffs. It is hard to not enjoy the good Maiden songs because of them. Flight of Icarus anyday... |
|
Jon Schaffer-Iced Earth is impressive.
|
Is this even a question? Hendrix is the king of rhythm guitar.

Hendrix is more of a jack of all trades, though...I kind of took this thread as best rhythm guitarist when there are two distinct rhythm and lead guitarists in the band. |

In that case I pick Stefan Koglek. Hes is the lead/only guitarist for Colour Haze a German stoner outfit. Apparently he started his carrear by learning nearly every Hendrix song, and when someone called him a little hendrix he stopped listening him altogether so he could develop his own style. It paid off. |

another one of my favorites is Izzy Stradlin of GunsNRoses. He's made some of my favorite riffs in songs like Mr Brownstone and Nighttrain |

I was about to post Izzy. Awesome guitarist, awesome songwriter, awesome singer, http://tinpan.fortunecity.com/ocean/468/izzy18.jpg and not a shabby solo career either. |
Page, Hendrix, Johnny Marr, Keef.

Rhythm guitarist. When did Hendrix and Page play rhythm on anything? |

the thing with Hendrix is that he seamlessly blended his rhythm and lead styles into a cohesive and unique package. seriously though, any time i comment in a 'best' guitar player thread i always read it as 'best not counting Hendrix since none have eclipsed him yet'.
and to say Page never played rhythm is the mark of a troll trying FAR too hard to get a rise out of guitarists as LZ's songwriting style kept the rhythm and lead parts quite distinct. you don't need to like his rhythm playing but to deny he did is absolute folly. |

yeah most of LZ1 is a tele
|
I always thought him mainly aLes Paul player. I just enjoy seeing single coils being used for heavier sounds. I love Strat/Tele (p90 style) guitars but for the music I play they seem to be far to thin sounding. Tele can get heavy but I doubt they could ever have enough bottom end and thickness covering a Kyuss and Sleep song.
ps awsome video |

yeah i wouldn't tune a single coil guitar lower than D. going down to C pretty much necessitates humbuckers. your also right that Page was more of a Les Paul player but just like Hendrix sometimes played a Gibson they were never 100% exclusive to their main models. glad you liked the clip :thumb: |

When a band only has one guitarist then usually that person has to fill the roles of both a lead and rhythm guitarist, the use of overdubbing is common. Quote:

James Hetfield, of course. He truly is talented, call him the devil, or tell him he can't sing, the guy is crazy good.

the bit that killed me the most in that intro was the very last lick. that effing triplet of muted notes on 3 different strings threw me off every single time, especially after getting through the preceding riff-age of the intro hehe. funny how combining riff-age gets censored haha |

It's hard to argue against Malcolm Young, he's one of the best at just rocking out the jam time and time again. |
Keith Richards & Pete Townshend
The Rolling Stones & The Who, has produced some of the best rythm guitar ever, just my personal opinion.
|
I don't know who played it-but one of my favorite rhythm guitar pieces is in "Roll on Down the Highway" by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Nuthin fancy but great chops that back up the lead playing perfectly!............ok, Malcom Young rules.
|
See imo Malcolm reinvented basic blues rock great band, especially the "Let there be Rock" album. Another couple of great rythm/lead guitarist are Dimebag Darell and Randy Rhoads. Rhoads was amazing.
|
Rhoads isn't exactly a lead guitarist, but he was one of the best. So was Dime, shame that the good die young.

Yeah. They were good people too. But no one should die the way Dime did. That is just messed up.

Ah yes, but I was exagerating. It is kin of hard to tell who is Rhythmand who is lead in Thin Lizzy. If both lead and rhythm play the same Riffs are they not both lead guitarists? I understand what ou meant by rhythm guitarists not playing solos, but I don't think that takes away from being considered rhythm, everone needs their chance to stand out.
|
I forgot to mention Black Dog by Zepp. That rhythm alone is one of the best ever.
