Never heard of Thin Lizzy? My classification of a rhythm guitarist is solely that. No solo's etc so that would mean both Smith and Gers discounted as they both play solo's.

Ah yes, but I was exagerating. It is kin of hard to tell who is Rhythmand who is lead in Thin Lizzy. If both lead and rhythm play the same Riffs are they not both lead guitarists? I understand what ou meant by rhythm guitarists not playing solos, but I don't think that takes away from being considered rhythm, everone needs their chance to stand out.
