Living Colour were excellent musicians. They kind of threw in some undertones of prog influence in with the obvious funky/rock/metal. And their cover of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" was pretty damn good. Also, it was one of Hendrix's best tunes, in my opinion, so it definitely reflects on their personal influence, and kind of hints at the fact that they were type of band to cover a song because it was really good, and not cover a song because everybody would know it.

They`re not really a group where you need the beginners guide as such, as they don`t have that many albums. Just start with the first two "Vivid" and "Times Up" In fact, these are the only two albums of theirs that I`ve listened too anyway.

I've just picked up this band randomly again, and I always wonder why Living Colour weren't as big as they could have been. They are treated as just sort of a figment of their times where they got massive huge, and then disappeared as if they were a dud.
I'm curious, was it due to overexposure? Did people just assume they were a gimmicky 'hey, now here's BLACK guys who rock, black guys can rock too!'? Did people assume they were just a one hit wonder with 'Cult of Personality', and assume the rest of their catalog was ****? I am listening to Callideoscope which came out in 2003, and it's a fairly solid album for start to finish, and as stated 'Vivid', and 'Times Up'(which I feel is much better than Vivid) are masterpieces. The band is just plain fantastic. Shame really, because it looks like they were killed by their own overhype by mainstream media, and kind of got the shaft in term of historical remembrance.

i have all three albums plus the Biscuits EP
i love 'em, Vernon is in my top five favourite guitarists, he played on Public Enemy's Sophisticated Bitch as well, which raises him up a few notches in my book |

Time's Up doesn't have any great tracks. That is why Living Colour's popularity plunged. Still, it's a decent album. (I am not familiar with later albums.) I have to agree about Corey Glover's singing and the musicianship (the guys could play virtually any genre well). I concur that it's the best non-white rock band.
