Representations of Women In Music Videos
Hey all,
Because of my media studies research on how women are representated in music videos, I wanted to know what you guys think about how women are shown in rock music videos. Any thuoghts? xxx |
yeah, let's make some generalizations. sounds like fun.
watch these three videos, then see if you can find a common theme: |

I'd say it'd be pretty degrading for music videos as a whole (esp. rap). But in rock videos too. It's just our culture. sex sells. demographics

*Yawn*
Noobs are incapable of posting an original sentiment, aren't they? |

I wasn't referring to you, but ok.

If your teacher is a small-minded "feminist" chode, write about hegemonic masculinity in music videos.
If your teacher is a small-minded racist chode, write about women being degraded in rap music. If your teacher is a small-minded republican chode, write about how censorship isn't tight enough and how the sexualization of music culture is causing teen pregnancy to rise or something. Just be Tipper Gore. If your teacher is actually cool and not a chode at all, do your homework and analyze some of your favorite music videos. Love/whoopee making songs seem to be popular nowadays or sumthin, so it makes sense that a lot of females are portrayed in overtly sexual ways or as love interests in vids for male artists. (Don't really know any mainstream lesbian artists nowadays.....Indigo Girls.....Katy Perry? Nah. **** it. You find this stuff.) Also, if all your favorite musicvideos are pretty much mainstream genital-touching tunes, watch a PJ Harvey video and compare. Or watch "Smile" by Lily Allen. I like that video and the song. I dislike PJ Harvey. God, this is a long post. I think I should stop, I just keep writing. I'm not even going to read what I wrote, I just totally helped you with your homework. Claps for me. |
especially for mentioning pj harvey.
|
Is that good or bad?
I've never seen a PJ Harvey video. I figure she just walks around in medows fully clothed, and it cuts to a shot of her in different lighting, in a different dress playing guitar or something. Or maybe thats every female artist in country ever. I forget. |
i've never seen a vid of hers, either...but now that you have described it that way it is the only way i can ever imagine it going down.
i did mean it as a good thing...i've only ever listened to one album of hers but she is pretty gritty and in your face for your typical female singer/songwriter. |
Dude, I'm a total feminst but I hate PJ Harvey. All the cool feminists listen to Bikini Kill.
|
well it is a good thing you mentioned that.
i was about to head to a feminist rally and attempt to make peace armed with nothing but pj harvey. that was too close. |
I feel like you're a lot smarter then me and I'm totally missing something here. Paranoid. You're conspiring against me. I'm sick. I'm getting sick thinking about you. ****.
|
hahaha
no need to be paranoid...i'm just being stupid. i'm supremely bored and these comments just seem to happen. |

Anyways, I just want to see the titties:) |
Bikini Kill DOES suck. They give carnies head for hits of pot and free rides. And Kathleen Hanna gave Kurt Cobain head on at least 4 recorded occasions.
|
I really hate Bikini Kill. Words cannot express how much.
Bratmobile was the **** though, but as for "feminist" bands, The Slits take the cake over all of them, or maybe Poison Girls, or Delta Five. mmm cake |
Well I think we all know who the REAL best feminist singer is:

I don't care for the Gossip much, but that article reminded me of how aweseome X Ray Spex is. Germfree Adolescents has to be one of my most prized vinyls.
But I think Wendy O Williams would kick the **** out of Beth Ditto |

PJ Harvey is effing awesome and the people 'discussing' her on the preceding page are morons.
this is also as close as i'm getting to doing someone else's homework. |
It's not exactly 'homework', it's coursework that expects me to be getting ideas from other people about what they think about how women are represented in music videos. You guys have been REALLY helpful! Gonna get on with the research concerning all them artists you guys were talking about! :)

I don't remember anyone asking you to do that. I'm glad you're true to your username though. Enough is enough, let this thread get back on topic.

They seem to be done with their assignment and there doesn't really seem to be anything else to say.
I suppose the music industry could be criticized because most female artists seem to have to be a high level of attractiveness in order to achieve mainstream success, but then I would have to take down the entire music industry in general. And besides, I would say that roughly half of the super mainstream male artists need to meet a certain aesthetic guideline and the other half play into subcultures to appeal to young audiences. Although music videos are an art form, I'm pretty much only describing super popular music. I reread all this and if I say the word mainstream again, I'm going to eat my computer monitor. |
yeah, i agree. mainstream singers both male and female have to appeal to a certain demographic. i can think of plenty of female musicians in bands that we here would consider respectable who, let's say, are not supermodels.
|
the VAST majority of the representations women in music videos are all the same, either...
A - trophies (whore, princess, or 'ugly' duckling doesn't matter) B - that they cannot stand on their own two feet without a group of men to support them. which then in turn leads to a bunch of angry 'grrrls' screaming about how much they don't need men to make music that sounds exactly like the stuff made with 100% pure testosterone. or the belief that any music made solely by a woman needs to be all acoustic guitars, pianos, and fluffy strings. saddest thing is that even the good ones get shafted with either option A or B or a combo of both. |
