Karnivool
Karnivool are an alt rock/prog rock band from Australia. With the huge amount of recognition they've gained in Australia, they are still yet to be a name recognised elsewhere, so I thought I'd start a thread because they're one of my favourite bands, I've seen them live numerous times and had the chance to meet them on several occasions... and I think they're just brilliant.
Those who are fans of Tool, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, and the likes may find themselves enjoying these guys. Some stuff from their newest album, Sound Awake: And songs from their earlier album, Themata: |
These and Cog have been great recommendations from you. I'm sure that if either band was from the U.S or the U.K then they would have a bigger profile. Sound Awake very very nearly made it onto my albums of 2009.
|
^ That's awesome that you love Sound Awake so much... it's a great album.
And Karnivool have just announced a UK tour if you're interested... not sure if they'll be playing anywhere near you, though. No more replies for this kickass band? You guys suck! :P |
So which one of their albums should I begin with? (One that sounds more Porcupine Tree and less Meshuggah...)
And also which Cog album? |
YES! Thank you Lateralus for starting this thread :D
 |
I remember downloading a few albums from these guys a while back and I really enjoyed it, but since then my computer crashed and I lost basically everything. I'll have to give these guys a re-download though. Really nice stuff.

As for Cog, I'd start with The New Normal as personally I never got into the more recent one as much. |
It's funny, I'm surrounded by these guys because a few of my friends are fans, but I've never been sucked in by them. I had the chance to see them live a few months ago, but even though they strike me as a band that would be great live I couldn't muster the excitement to travel to Sydney.
I do really enjoy the song from Sound Awake with the chorus "We're Slaves blah blah", I think it's definitely the better album of the two. |
My friend introduced me to Karnivool midway through last year and then I saw them live with him in November, they are ****ing awesome live and I even got to meet Ian Kenny (the singer) afterwards! Since then Sound Awake has not only become one of my favourite 09 albums but one of my favourite albums ever.
New Day, Set Fire to the Hive, Deadman, Simple Boy, All I Know and Illumine are all phenomenal songs. |
I am beyond in love with Sound Awake. The music isn't innovative or anything, but there is so much passion. I also have sort of a soft-side for any anti-religion-themed album as long as it isn't pretentious, which the thing I like most about this music is that it isn't at all.
|
Also if you like karnivool you might wanna check out their singers other band Birds of Tokyo.

But anyway, Karnivool are the balls. Really wanted to see them live recently but there was a pretty annoying age limit on the venue. |

Yeah it's pretty kick-ass. Gotta nab this stuff
|
Saw these guys last night in Canberra. Absolute Kick ass-show. The place just went off to "Set Fire to the Hive". I went off to "Umbra". Can't wait to see them again.

Seen them last week. It was the most energetic gig I've ever been to, EVERYONE was going crazy, even people up the back, you don't see stuff like that all that often. Karnivool were amazing.
|
Okay so I saw them live last night at the Hi Fi... AMAZING! Which isn't surprising really because they are always amazing. But ugh. So amazing. They played all the main songs off the new album, as well as old favourites such as Cote, Themata, and Roquefort... and they even played Fade off their EP! I haven't heard them play that song live for ages. The only song they missed out on was Deadman, but apparently the Melbourne show got Cote instead of Deadman. Which I'm pretty happy about. I also got to pay Ian Kenny on the back, YES.
Some photos from the tour (which I didn't take) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._7076301_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2464437_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6398743_n.jpg There was also an amazing light show, lots of lasers and cool effects, for a small venue it was really atmospheric. Enormous buzz. **** I love these guys. It was also several member's birthdays so we sang happy birthday to them. :) Oh yeah and I forgot to mention I was standing next to Billy Ray Cyrus during the support band. What the? So random. I'm not even kidding. |
I missed those guys in March. They came through my state and I had no idea. Balls.

Single word, single vowel, yet nothing frustrates me' part onwards. So many great singing-and-reaching-for-the-sky/stage bits! Did you guys get Fade, too? I was so psyched to hear that song. Like I said, hadn't heard it live for at least a couple of years! |
Ohh yeah we got fade as well :D
Absolutely everyone in The Metro was jumping, it was crazy. I've never seen a more energetic gig before. |

Also, the second Melbourne show (last night) was cancelled due to a "medical emergency." Does anyone know why? Not sure if they're gonna cancel tonight's as well... |
Saw them live about a week ago at the Ferntree Gully Hotel in Melbourne... I'm actually a little disappointed! For the first time Karnivool have let me down... their show just wasn't as mindblowing as all the ones I've been to in the passed. Not sure if it was the venue or other factors. But yeah. A new album might re-ignite the spark.
|
Karnivool!!
:pssst: Best kept secret in Oz?
Australian natives Karnivool... influences are Tool... but they rock so much harder 1 EP followed by 2 albums, each more progressive than the last. I just love these guys, what do you guys think of them? Can't post links yet, so just do a search for their soundcloud |
....bump!
Who's pumped for the new album and thoughts on their new single? I'm seeing them live shortly after their new album release this year. |
No idea, they had new material coming out.
I think I got into this band by hearing one of their songs in a MB turntable session or that other place we used to play music in. I like this new single though. |

I can't believe I created this thread three years ago... They've started to pick up a huge amount of pace overseas which is pretty cool. |
|
I like Themata better
|
Oh my good I love Karnivool. I found them on Last.fm while researching Fair to Midland. through that I found Dredge and Rishloo. That was a good year.
|
So... Asymmetry was released today - who's digging it?!
I will refrain from commenting as I'm only a quarter of the way through but so far it seems a quality album. Karnivool, you do not fail to disappoint. Am very much looking forward to seeing them live in two weeks! Yeeahhhhhh! |
After a few listens Asymmetry just isn't doing it for me like Themata and Sound Awake did. Anyway, I saw Karnivool live last night - gig review here.
