Karnivool

Karnivool are an alt rock/prog rock band from Australia. With the huge amount of recognition they've gained in Australia, they are still yet to be a name recognised elsewhere, so I thought I'd start a thread because they're one of my favourite bands, I've seen them live numerous times and had the chance to meet them on several occasions... and I think they're just brilliant.

Those who are fans of Tool, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, and the likes may find themselves enjoying these guys.

Some stuff from their newest album, Sound Awake:

And songs from their earlier album, Themata:

These and Cog have been great recommendations from you. I'm sure that if either band was from the U.S or the U.K then they would have a bigger profile. Sound Awake very very nearly made it onto my albums of 2009.

^ That's awesome that you love Sound Awake so much... it's a great album.

And Karnivool have just announced a UK tour if you're interested... not sure if they'll be playing anywhere near you, though.

No more replies for this kickass band? You guys suck! :P

So which one of their albums should I begin with? (One that sounds more Porcupine Tree and less Meshuggah...)
And also which Cog album?

YES! Thank you Lateralus for starting this thread :D

I remember downloading a few albums from these guys a while back and I really enjoyed it, but since then my computer crashed and I lost basically everything. I'll have to give these guys a re-download though. Really nice stuff.

Well both bands only really have 2 full-length albums. I think you'd enjoy either Karnivool album, they're more similar to Porcupine Tree than Meshuggah anyway, the vocals are very Porcupine Tree-esque. Themata and Sound Awake are both pretty accessible but I tend to find that more people prefer the latter.

As for Cog, I'd start with The New Normal as personally I never got into the more recent one as much.

It's funny, I'm surrounded by these guys because a few of my friends are fans, but I've never been sucked in by them. I had the chance to see them live a few months ago, but even though they strike me as a band that would be great live I couldn't muster the excitement to travel to Sydney.

I do really enjoy the song from Sound Awake with the chorus "We're Slaves blah blah", I think it's definitely the better album of the two.

My friend introduced me to Karnivool midway through last year and then I saw them live with him in November, they are ****ing awesome live and I even got to meet Ian Kenny (the singer) afterwards! Since then Sound Awake has not only become one of my favourite 09 albums but one of my favourite albums ever.

New Day, Set Fire to the Hive, Deadman, Simple Boy, All I Know and Illumine are all phenomenal songs.

I am beyond in love with Sound Awake. The music isn't innovative or anything, but there is so much passion. I also have sort of a soft-side for any anti-religion-themed album as long as it isn't pretentious, which the thing I like most about this music is that it isn't at all.
