I'm a fan only through Rust In Peace - even that was one I only came to appreciate more recently.
The narcissism (and drug addiction) were the only things that held Mustaine back from his ultimate dream - to dethrone Metallica.
I think Mustaine was a highly talented kid who actually did "invent" certain aspects of thrash (as he continually states) - and the early albums have some of the best thrash riffs of all time. I like how Mustaine considered both melody and technical skill essential even in his attempts to be the heaviest around - that combo served him well (at least in the 80s).

I like "Sweating Bullets" but that's it. Great technical band, and I understand why they have so many millions of fans. I just don't really like Dave's vocals.

Sweating bullets? That's a weird pick :p: If someone were to like one song out of countdown to extinction, you'd figure it would be something like symphony of destruction or Foreclosure of a dream.

I also love Captive Honour from that album, but there's a catch ..



The silly trial is a bit embarassing. I know how it's sorta central to the point, but I've never really come to terms with it. Gotta love the lyrics though :D

as with many people, Megadeth is one of my favorite bands, i remember getting into them in sophomore year of high school when i got Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? for christmas. just the speed and technicality of the music blew me away. it was like nothign else i'd ever heard. my love for them increased when i finally got Rust in Peace, still one of if not my most favorite metal albums to date. every song was just masterful and it was really the band in its creative peak. i feel that Dave Mustaine is not only one hell of a guitarist, but also a great lyrcist and composer.

i also loved the band's Behind the Music, which frankly surprised me in the amount of **** Dave went through (abusive father, drugs and rehab, etc) and i now have a newfound respect for him.

as for their music, listening to it has really influenced me in my playing and pushed me in terms of precision and technicality. learning alot of their riffs and the unusual forms of them also helped in opening my mind for new song ideas.

i have this band to thank for the music i listen to today as well as a good amount of my playing, and i hope they can soldier on and keep making great music.

Rust in Peace and So Far, So Good, So What were both classic albums. After those two I lost interest.

Interesting, So Far has some classics but is the generally regarded as the worst of their 80's albums... If you are on the thrash tip right now you really need to check out, in the following order:
Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! (1985)
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (1986)

That's Megadeth's essential opening assault and rebuttal to Metallica's success imo, the remastering has given Killing... a new lease of life, it's just f*cking relentless. But Peace Sells... is the masterpiece, along with Rust

I caught So Far... right when it came out, so for that reason it has a little added relevance, but I almost forgot about Killing is My Business.... Yeah, you're definitely right about that one being a quintessential classic.

yeah, don't get me wrong i do like So Far, even the Anarchy in the UK cover is great, it highlights thrash's punk credentials which is sort of my musical roots :D And as an album parts of it are prophetic of Mustaine fully exploring his songwriting skills in the 90's (which had mixed results, obviously)... In My Darkest Hour, Mary Jane and all that, there were a few of the slower songs sneaking in.
But it is a classic near-casualty of murky 80's metal production imo, that holds it back a little

Hook in Mouth is definitely my favorite off the album.

I like the breakdown in "Sweating Bullets", hate the verses. "Sypmphony" has a classic riff, but I don't like the vocals to the point that I feel embarassed to listen to them. I understand he went through alot of ****, but he also says alot stupid ****, so that clouds my vision.
