i don't know why 10,000 days get so much flak. it's beautiful to me. to see it live is phenomenal. my only problem with it is that the engineer left it a little muddy in some parts. other than that, it's the perfect next step in their progression of musical expression. it's just so wide open. and it still abides by their sort of 'rule' that all songs individually need to be autonomous and great while still contributing to the flow of awesomeness which is the album in its entirety.

and mellow? i disagree thoroughly. the subject matter and the outrageous-yet-not-flippant dynamics make it just as intense as ever, if not more.

it makes me very happy to see them just doing what they want to do, and not regurgitating the past and choking on their attempts to relive it. if all musicians behaved like tool, pretense and expectations regarding artists and their output would be obsolete.
