Agreed. Tool is one of those bands where you know the album is going to be great if they are taking a long time to record and release it. I expect nothing but amazing with an upcoming record from them.

Eh, I know they like to take time with their releases to make them 'perfect' and quality or whatever, but it took sooooo long for 10,000 days to come out and it just wasn't up there for me. Their albums are taking longer to create and they seem to be deteriorating.

If you're looking for something to curb the shakes and sweats that accompany waiting for a new Tool release I would recommend checking out the band Rishloo. They kind of occupy the same space as Pineapple Thief, a band that manages to mimic the sound and style of another, better band, but does so in such a way that makes them quite listenable. I would recommend their 2007 album Eidolon, although I've heard good things about their 2004 album Terras Fames.
Thank you kind sir

Cool, I will check them out! Thanks!

10,000 Days wasn't quite as good as Ænima and Lateralus but I'm still wondering can they still pull off something impressive at this stage in their career. Hopefully they will release something late this year or early next year.
I'm with you Zer0. Somehow I don't think anything will be released late this year or early next. I actually heard an interview with Danny Carey on the radio and he said next year at the very EARLIEST (read: not next year).

They're definitely working on new stuff, they just released the first ever pictures of them writing.

Every single Tool song ever from Opiate to the one they are currently working on was written entirely in the room those pics were taken in.

^ Yeah I've seen Maynard's video blogs of them 'writing' too, though he started posting them up around 2 years ago...

To go back to the argument about "who's best" in Tool - I think the question misses the point.

Questions like that are the sort that create things like "Supergroups" which are universally terrible. The question puts a premium on talent and disregards cohesion. Which is what Tool has going for it and why I think they have more universal appeal.

People know talent when they see it, even if they don't like it. But when its 4 guys being awesome at their own thing its boring. When they have a unity of effect, its so much more impressive.

Sometimes knowing when to pull up on the reigns is far more important than memorizing your scales.

True. There's nothing wrong with taking your time on an album. It's certainly an unusual thing to do. I wish more bands would take their time and go through some ideas instead of just slapping everything together real fast. But that's not to say there hasn't been some good music that was put together rather quickly.

Yeah, I agree Big3. I could never pick a 'best' or 'favourite' band member of Tool...

I agree with this as well. There's not really one members I like more than the other.

I'm on board with this line of thinking. When 10,000 Days came out, I thought it was a joke album they had slapped together real quick to make us go "This is it? All that waiting for this!?" and then they would come out with the real album. The real album never came out. I didn't lose heart. 10,000 Days grew on me to an extent. I don't dislike it at all, at least not anymore. I was expecting something else, though. I'm very excited to hear their latest.
