|
Concerts? >.>
That's where I discover most of my music. |

for the last few years i'v just took advise from a few friends that have similar taste as i. or i'v followed certain artists history and listened to the bands he/she have been invloved with. it would be nice to have another source or two. |

It took me a really long time to find new music through this site. |
r people really that simple or is it just weak attempts to be a smartass?
wow, never heard of an album before. holy ****, i'm on a music forum!? |
I never listen to the radio, satellite or otherwise, I am huge into podcasts but they're mostly lectures and interviews, not music, and most of the music information I get comes from friends, research, and here.
|
I never really got into podcasts.
I know someone at my school has one. But I never listened. |
Mostly I'll just read articles and find related bands in the same genre, then maybe check them out on youtube, find stuff on here.
I actually keep a list on my computer of new bands whose music I should get, that is a big help, liek I said I'll listen to them on youtube and if I like it it goes on the list. |
Last.fm has been helping a lot, as well.
|
Most of my music comes from a music sharing group I belong to, every day or two I get a new album sent to my e-mail inbox, it's a pretty easy way of finding new music. As far as absolute new music (i.e. music not from other people) I use last.fm to find new artists, then usually a blog that has the album uploaded so I can download it and listen to it. I have been thinking about doing an experiment in the future where I do nothing but listen to the radio for a full 24 hours.
|
I quite like Paladia, actually...
|
I listen to online radio. It has all of my genres there.
|
While cleaning the house yesterday i had the radio on downstairs throughout the day on XFM (my first foray into radio for nearly 6 years) and it was distinctly average. I swear i heard the new Linkin Park song 3 times, lazy playlisting!
|
Literally the only reason I listen to the radio these days is to keep up with the football on BBC Radio 5 and hear Alan Green dig himself deeper holes among varying circles of fans with every broadcast. Haven't listened to it for musical purposes since I was taking a taxi in and out of school a good 6 or 7 years ago. And that wasn't exactly by choice either.
|
Believe it or not ,I find a lot of new stuff researching on itunes. Usually when you look at the suggestions they give ,they suck! But, if you keep digging every once and a while you find a gem.

I worked at K-Mart, and they have their own stupid little radio station. For some reason, they find a reason to play Green Day's "Warning", Ashley Simpson's "LOVE", Boston's "Amanda," and Elvis Costello's "Alison" at least three times a day. |
I mostly find new music through talking to you all, my "real life" friends and just endless sampling and searching on the internet. Let's face it. In today's world, we've got to do a little bit of work to find something worthwhile. I've found some amazing tunes through MB, though. Just wish I had more time.

Disappointing to hear that Satellite radio is clinging so closely to lazy ass commercial playlisting as well...
Now here's a technology that has the potential to open up tons and tons of new music and different alternative channels, featuring new artists, etc... but its just sticking to the same old tried and true methodology... There needs to be more imagination in programming.... then maybe more people will find it useful and put down their whatever per month subscriptions... Strangely enough, I have found some fairly interesting music on the alternative music channel through my cable provider... and i also listen to internet radio from time to time.... other than that I get good suggestions and ideas from the fine folks at this good website! |

And during the holidays they played the same two Christmas CDs over and over. Needless to say, I'll never think of Christmas music the same way . |

I think RYM is a good way but a lot of people neglect that. If you have a lot of your collection catalogued and especially if you have rated a lot of albums then finding new but similar stuff is fairly easy and more likely to pay off. Plus, the user made lists can be very good, depending on comments they make in the lists.

I could attempt to make a recommendation based on your knowledge of Tool, but I'd most likely fail. Nevertheless, here it goes: The Church (Priest=Aura), Coheed and Cambria, and most of all Porcupine Tree (Deadwing album). I will brace myself for critque on these choices.
|
No critique at all! Some damn fine choices in my opinion... good to see Priest = Aura in there... freaking amazing album that I could play nytime and enjoy immensely
|
What genre is Coheed considered?
I can't help but wonder. |
Hardcore? I dunno, thats probably selling them short.... from what I do know about them (very little) I think they are kinda heavy, thrashy, not overly complex musically, but lyrically quite cool... but I know bugger all about them, so if anyone wants to correct me... :-)
|
I definitely don't think they're hardcore. xD

For finding new stuff, figure out what exactly you're into, then look at websites, find blogs to follow, wikipedia genres, pandora.com lets you make a radio station with artists you like and plays similar tracks, spinner.com lets you listen to a bunch of full albums just released, buy music magazines, look up songs you like on youtube and see what related videos come up, find out what labels the bands you like are on and go to their websites, you could even go to myspace and search bands you like, then branch out through their friends, who are usually similar artists. There's a lot of ways to find new bands... but if you aren't that into music yet, it'll get a lot easier as you start to know more bands and figure out the genres you like. Or you can be like me and just sort through tons of crap for a few good albums, but I don't think many people actually like doing that.
|
Pandora is really the closest thing to a radio station I listen to at that point. Can't handle the regular radio, mostly commercials, and a good song is like 1 in 10...
|
I have the local (Milwaukee) alternative station on in the car, I believe its called 102.1 Independent Alternative Radio... long name... but it's a pretty decent station, for a radio station, of course...
Otherwise I mostly listen to my own Mp3's or CDs... |
