15 ?
Wimps ...have my top 100 , although I should point out this was written almost 2 and a half years ago , it would be very different now 100 SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNICK - LOVE MISSILE F1-11 You either had to be dead or need a sense of humour transplant not to love this.Never before has a blatant cash in been so much fun to listen too.Their album even had adverts between the songs. 99 TOM JONES - IT`S NOT UNUSUAL This is what i`m usually singing (badly) after a good night out.Classic song too 98 JUDAS PRIEST - YOU`VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN One of the greatest metal songs ever written.Halford`s vocals are godlike 97 HEFNER - SONG FOR THE CIGARETTES More cigarette references than a formula one race.I can`t think of any song where the singer refers to events in his life by the ***s he was smoking at the time. 96 QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - FEELGOOD HIT OF THE SUMMER Not so much of a song.More of a checklist for a good night out ... still rocks though 95 1000 HOMO DJ`S - SUPERNAUT A fantastic sabbath cover done by an Al Jourganson/Ministry side project.Worth getting just for the 'Hey *******'B side with a cop pulling a guy over & giving him abuse while in the background you have the backing vocals repeadedly chanting the songs title. 94 ED HARCOURT - SHANGHAI A singer songwriter with a difference ... he`s not afraid to rock out a bit, class song too. 93 IRON MAIDEN - SANCTUARY The nearest they ever got to being'punk rock'such a shame they left that direction to write 15 min epics about sailors shooting seagulls or something. 92 ASH - JESUS SAYS I know the album was **** but i STILL think this is their best single 91 DIVINE COMEDY - LOVE WHAT YOU DO I thought this was probably one of the best singles of 2001.It did **** all so i guess that says more about what i think than anything else does 90 SMASHING PUMPKINS - TODAY In all honesty this could be any song of Siamese Dream it was such a good album but i`ve gone with this one.Shame after this they went **** & Corgan turned into a whining slaphead. 89 AUTEURS - LENNY VALENTINO This band are easily the best kept secret in Britain.Intelligent rock without the pretentiousness of Radiohead`s later efforts. 88 GRANDADDY - THE CRYSTAL LAKE Beautiful & chilled out song , just the sort of thing to calm you down after a hard day. 87 CHEAP TRICK - I WANT YOU TO WANT ME Pure unashamed pop & all the better for it.Catchy as hell 86 MENSWEAR - DAYDREAMER Horrible band that exemplified everything bad about the Britpop movement but this song was so good i forgave & just enjoyed the music (Well just this song anyway) 85 BLACK GRAPE - KELLY`S HERO`S Jesus was a black man , No Jesus was Batman , no no no that was Bruce Waaaaaaaaaaayne..... How can you not like a song with lyrics like that. 84 JESUS & MARY CHAIN - UPSIDE DOWN Their first single. A primal blast of raw feedback somehow shaped into some sort of a song. 83 BREEDERS - CANNONBALL Melody Makers 1993 single of the year.Like Blondie jamming with the Ramones 82 HANOI ROCKS - DON`T EVER LEAVE ME Thank god Axl Rose never used this for the GnR covers album.Do yourself a favor & get the original. 81 THEREPY? - SCREAMAGER The nearest a British band ever got to writing anything like Smells Like Teen Spirit.EVERBODY i know liked this song. 80 PINK FLOYD - ARNOLD LAYNE Beleive it or not they were a very good psychadelic pop band at one time.Funny as hell too 79 SPACE - YOU & ME VS THE WORLD I`ve lost count of the number of films that have included this song.Very personal to me too. 78 PORTISHEAD - SOUR TIMES This is one of those songs I was sick to death of hearing at the time but when it stopped getting played i sorta missed it. 77 BETA BAND - DRY THE RAIN I will now sell 5 copies of the 3 EPs by the Beta Band..... 76 RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - HIGHER GROUND Pisses over their own material 75 CORNERSHOP - LESSONS LEARNED FROM ROCKY 1 TO ROCKY 3 Scathing attack on the music industry , great riff borrowed from the Stones at their best & still my favorite single of the year so far. 74 RAMONES - BABY I LOVE YOU The Ramones were not a punk band .They were a Rock n Roll band who just happened to play fast, they could slow it down too judging by this song plus it was produced by the legendary Phil Spector. 73 ELASTICA - CONNECTION Their career highlight , having this song used as the music to Trigger Happy TV 72 WIRE - OUTDOOR MINER Possibly the most melodic punk song ever written 71 SLADE - *** ON FEEL THE NOIZE They would probably been given more credit for their contribution to music had they not done merry xmas everyone , and remind us of it ...EVERY ****ING YEAR. 70 CURE - LULLABY Their best single off their best album. You couldn`t get away from this in 89/90 69 BEATLES - HELTER SKELTER The song that invented Grunge. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth said so and as it was him who got Nirvana signed so if you disagree you can go argue with him. 68 UNDERTONES - TEENAGE KICKS John Peel`s favorite song.As i`m not John Peel it only makes 68 67 LOU REED - WALK ON THE WILD SIDE OK so his name sounds like a book you`d find in a toilet but this is a great song & EVERYBODY in the UK (TV , radio , media ect) missed out the blow job reference. 66 MOTORHEAD - ACE OF SPADES EVERY metal covers band i know does this for an encore 65 STRANGLERS - GOLDEN BROWN I never really did see them as punks. They seemed to me to be more like a bunch of old pub rockers. This however was a class tune. 64 PRODIGY - FIRESTARTER I remember seeing the video on TV for the first time in the pub. Everybody was just staring at the screen jaws wide open in disbelief. 63 GORKYS ZYGOTIC MYNCI - YOUNG GIRLS & HAPPY ENDINGS Brilliant parody of teen pop love songs. The basic premace for the song is a pop star telling a girl he didn`t write a love song coz he loves her but he wrote it to make money. Sheer genius. 62 SONIC YOUTH - SUNDAY A gem in the middle of a 10 year long downturn in quality songs. 61 TELEVISION - MARQUEE MOON Wonderful song ... I have a 16 min version somewhere 60 JANES ADDICTION - BEEN CAUGHT STEALING One of the funkiest songs ever written by a white man 59 BUZZ****S - EVER FALLEN IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE YOU SHOULDN`T HAVE They did the whole thing better than all those crappy American immitators 58 KINKS - YOU REALLY GOT ME Credited by some as the first ever metal song of all time.Van Halens version was alright too 57 EELS _ NOVOCAINE FOR THE SOUL Brilliant song from possibly the most criminally ignored band to come out of the U.S. 56 PUBLIC ENEMY - DON`T BELEIVE THE HYPE I just didn`t get rap till I heard this. 55 SUPERGRASS - RICHARD III One of the heaviest songs they`ve ever done complete with Star Trek style theremins.Shut the people in the press calling them the new Monkees up too. 54 DAMNED - SMASH IT UP For a band called the Damned who played punk rock & wrote a song about smashing up things I have to say the first time I heard it I was expecting something a little more ...um violent & heavier.Grew to love it in time. 53 GOMEZ - WHIPPIN PICADILLY Great song from a once great band. Now however they sound more like a school orchestra tuning up. 52 THIN LIZZY - DON`T BELEIVE A WORD It`s a farce none of this bands work were on the top 100 rock list.So here they are on mine & this is my favorite Thin Lizzy tune. 51 IGGY POP - THE PASSENGER LA LA LA LA LALA LALA ... LA LA LA LA LALA LALA |
