Albeit he's not in contendership probably. Janick Top can be quite awesome:

I was actually referring to Chris Squire as being a personal favorite. Who is the best, is really irrelevant in the end.

Squire in my opinion, just had a perfect balance of soul/R&B/funk, speed, dynamics, stage presence, technical ability..popularity.

I'm not sure if I've already posted here before but John Entwistle is a bass beast.

Lend your ears to this...

Les Claypool, without a doubt

a virtuoso that actually sounds interesting, and not just wanking

I've seen Claypool a couple times live. He's never gone off into any wankery, although he could if he wanted to. I think he's more about playing in harmony with his band rather than doing a lot of self indulgent wanking.

John Entwistle.

"Stanley Clarke" was a popular bassist in the 70s. I personally, just never could get into his style and sound of music.

"Herbie Hancock" was another artist (pianist, bandleader and composer) from the same era, whose style and sound was similar to Clarke's. They both had a style of jazz, that I personally just couldn't connect with.

edit:
One bass player Ill give mention to is Nathan East. He is a member of Smooth Jazz quartet Fourplay and has recorded, performed and co-written songs with performers such as Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Toto and Herbie Hancock. This guy is awesome, to say the least.

If we're talking about "attitude" (stage presence), Drugs (heroin), Women (Nancy Spungen), and (Punk) Rock & Roll.

Id pick: Sid Vicious.

How about someone who actually knew how to play the instrument?

Like for the same criteria... Nikki Sixx
