I've never heard a metal fan say anything bad about Windir - considering that a lot of metal fans aren't fans of black metal and many of those who are tend to be elitist/twattish, that's a pretty good track record.

Motorhead, Death and Sabbath are all well respected. Slayer for the most part is respected but a lot of people dislike Kerry King's playing. While Maiden is mostly respected, there are some metalheads who disown them for not being br00tal enough.

While that's true I think Iron Maiden are usually the stepping stone for many younger people when they're trying to get into metal. I know for me they were my 4th metal band I ever got into. In the documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" the narrator, Samuel Dunn, states that Maiden were his first band, but when he entered high school he had a desire for something heavier and that's where Slayer and some of the more extreme metal bands came in.

I think this is true for many metal heads, Maiden is the first band you get into because while they're hard, they're not overly aggressive which can turn off younger fans.

There's just too many kinds of metal bands for there to be some that everyone likes, so thats why I think Maiden and Sabbath are respected, cause without them, there would be no metal at all or not as we know it.

Of the new bands today, Opeth, Agalloch, and Isis seem to get the respect of most except those who are too br00tal just want their thrash and death and kvlt black metulz.

A good friend of mine simply can't stand Iron Maiden, but he is a big fan of Waking the Cadaver. Not sure how that works...

Does he at least respect them though? What i've noticed is a lot of ppl who don't necessarily listen to Iron Maiden, for example, still recognize them as a great band and respect their work. I'm kind of the same way actually, but I still listen to them once and a while.

To add to this, most extreme metalheads respect Death and Bathory at least.

More specifically later era Bathory. I can think of a lot of people who dislike their early material but respect/like the viking stuff.

Yeah, Bathory is a good candidate for this.

Go to metal-archives and you'll see plenty of people who hate Opeth, often because of their non-metal influences.

ISIS is reasonably well respected but some find them boring.

Lol looks like someone just stolled on in here and shot himself in the foot.

I agree with most of the bands mentioned, Slayer and Maiden are untouchable. Throw in Judas Priest and Voivod.
