I remember the list, and the story about it's origin from HYPE - but not any of the definitions (I think I might be proud of that)

Yes it's 'grunge talk', i've seen that list many times before. None of those have real definitions because they were all made up as a joke.

Vote With A Bullet 07-13-2009 10:00 AM

Grunge was significant enough a scene to develop it's own language and terms?

Well, it was perceived as such - which was ridiculous, which was the point... an intern made up the definitions for these terms in response to inane questions from a reporter studying "the grunge movement"... people who were there, then, seem to view "grunge" as a joke that got out of hand

BTown 07-13-2009 01:00 PM

Yeah, someone from Sub-Pop records made all these terms up like Tom Tom Club meaning "Uncool Outsiders" and such as a joke and the reporter for the New York Times published as "The Lexicon Of Grunge,Coming to a High School or Mall Near You"

Vote With A Bullet 07-13-2009 08:35 PM

Seriously?

That's pretty interesting actually.

BTown 07-13-2009 09:49 PM

Yeah I thought the same thing, for anyone that's interested;

* bloated, big bag of blotation - drunk
* bound-and-hagged - staying home on Friday or Saturday night
* cob nobbler - loser
* dish - desirable guy
* fuzz - heavy wool sweaters
* harsh realm - bummer
* lock - agreement
* kickers - heavy boots
* lamestain - uncool person
* pain ride - bus trip
* plats - platform shoes
* rock on - a happy goodbye
* score - great
* swingin' on the flippity-flop - hanging out
* tom-tom club - uncool outsiders
* wack slacks - old ripped jeans
* mickey sticks - older music fan

If you think that's interesting, google 'sokal hoax'. It's not music related, but even more interesting. :laughing:
