Krist didn't drop out of the music buisness, he played in a lot of bands after Nirvana such as;

The No WTO Combo (with Jello Biafra, and Kim Thayil from Soundgarden
Eyes Adrift (With Bud Gaugh of Sublime and Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, only lasting a year.)
Sweet 75 (1995-2000)
And in Flipper for a couple years from 2006-2008, he is on there new albums Love(studio album) and Fight (Live album)
He now writes for a Seatle Newspaper.

Also, in regards to the outcome if he had a solo career, I don't think he would get very big, he didn't want to be big. The last week before his death he talked about leaving hte music industry or just going back to recording stuff on a 4 track.
I could see him just vanishing from the spotlight and going back to playing small local shows around Seatle with a new name.

although now krist is balding and a tad overweight . . . and he had been friends with kurt since high school - thats why i feel sorry for him

but yeah, he's aged well. living on the road keeps you trim. working in an office does not.

$50 says he would have gone off his rocker and completely alienate his fans by switching to some weird, niche genre of music.

Listening to Nirvana now, I kinda forgot how much I liked them. Not listened to them in a while, I'll have to put Nevermind on the stereo soon.
