Strangely enough, a lot of artists can also do that.

Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) should have been mentioned. He's a good one, but seems to avoid the spotlight.

I've always been hot for Geezer Butler's style, the way he could just float up and down with his notes and keep it tasteful and groovy, as well as Mel Schacher from Grand Funk, for the much of the same reason as well as his crazy good grooves.

Very true, when talking about Geddy Lee, Chris Squire and a hand full of others as well. But not all vocalist have the patience or talent to synchronize playing bass and singing lead vocals at the same time. For example, playing rythm guitar, keyboards, and even the drums while being the lead vocalist is much more easy to accomplish than playing bass and doing the vocals. Especially being outstanding at both. I find with most bass player/lead vocalist, their bass playing is usually not that impressive, or at least, not as impressive as their vocals are.

Well I do agree it is harder than the other instruments mentioned I admit, but to me personally it seems to be much more easier to synchronize with the vocals than playing the bass and singing. There certainly is a lot more physical effort involved. And sitting down espeacially can prove to be quite more difficult in comparison to singing while standing up for most vocalist. Phil Collins and Don Henley are two artist that eventually abandoned the drums full time in order to more concentrate and perform their vocals better. The drummer for Queen does an outstanding job on a couple of songs, but mostly just backups.
