To find the good albums in both these sub-genres you have to look deep and in Nu-Metals case, its just a case of looking at the the debut albums by the main bands, as it was mostly downhill for most of them quite quickly. As much as I trash hair metal I`d actually say if I was stuck on a desert island and had to chose between a bunch of hair metal and Nu-Metal cds I`d pick the hair metal ones.
I like some of both hair metal and nu-metal. It seems like the grunge era (scene) might fall in the same category, in relation to musical evolution for some odd reason. Especially as being criticized as a weak and musically unpopular genre.

I like more stuff labeled as grunge than I do hair metal or nu-metal though. Of course, Grunge was a majoy influence on Nu-Metal as well. I have yet to meet a Nu-Metal fan who doesnt love Nirvana (though usually that is where it ends... a few may add Mudhoney or Tad though).

But grunge had evolution just look at the the discographies of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots. Post-grunge bands though thats a different thing, now most of those are terrible and any evolution that may have taken place is irrelevant given how bad most are.

and that's one reason why the genre is awesome, because you get a huge variety of influences and sounds, so two different nu metal bands hardly sound alike.

I like the Chaos A.D and Roots by Sepultura and Soulfly, that's about it.
