I do not know, when talking nu-metal, you get yourself into hot water with many metal fan...

the only album I actually still find to be amazing out of all that stuff is "White Pony" by Deftones. There are a few others, but I think the excellent music is ruined by awful lyrics and vocals a lot, such as "L.D. 50" by Mudvayne. It is not really a scene that I think has a lot of long term impact and wears thin very quickly.

To me, it is better to just go with the Alternative Metal scene before it... and just go out and buy "Meantime" by Helmet. Stuff like that is more to my liking.

Hair Metal, I am not a fan of, can't recommend anything there.

Metal is just such a broad genre. You have the sub-genres of, and every sub-genre has its different sub-genres attached to them as well... it just gets so confusing. For me, I guess I like metal more on the "extreme" side, so my knowledge of stuff like nu-metal and all that is very slim. I know some from having friends into it when it was at the peak of popularity and hearing it... I even got into it... but the only album I find I can still listen to now is "White Pony", hence why I recommend that one... but I am guessing you already know that one, so I was no help at all, haha!
