Either Kill 'Em All as Ducke said, or Ride the Lightning. Their two best and first, but I prefer Ride the Lightning.

Totally agree. Master Of Puppets is next, then after that it started to get kind of bad. And Justice For All was still good, but a step down IMO. Black Album on up stinks.

I will always have the first three though, good enough, some of the best metal albums ever released.

I think Dyers Eve off And Justice is one of their best songs. Its a great album. As Jackhammer said, I also love Garage Days its a fantastic album, but certainly the first three were what drove them to success.

Seriously. They have made better albums in terms of technical prowess and/or complexity but there is such an honesty with this E.P and it still sounds so good over 20 years later.

Oh god, *hits self* I totally forgot about Master of Puppets. Yes, this is the order that one should be listening to Metallica in.

Either Ride the Lightning for the strength and diversity of it's songs, or Master of Puppets for how well it works as an album.

Master of Puppets has always been my favourite 'tallica record, though I have to say, generally I'm more interested in extreme thrash, proto-death stuff like Vulcano, Mutilator, Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Necrodeath etc.
