wtf? how is this black metal?
They started out as a traditional black metal band but moved away from it after their demo, so that's where the association comes from. Their debut album Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde is closer to shoegaze but their last album Écailles de Lune had some black metal influences seeping back in. They're closer to post-rock/post-metal these days rather than black metal but still retain some BM traits.

it's just pure shoegazer with distortion
Shoegaze bands use distortion too you know. Wouldn't say Alcest are pure shoegaze though.

I should've put my other post in here instead.
What's some stuff like Atheist's 2nd and 3rd album? Jazzy, techy, and brutal.
I don't like Cynic that much.

Cynic is something like a heavy metal Mahavishnu Orchestra

if you don't like the Orc, chances are you won't like Cynic either

Liquid Tension Experiment fits. Not as brutal as Atheist, but very techy and jazzy.
