In PJ`s case no, I think its more of an acquired taste to their type of sound which has all the trappings of classic hard rock from the 70`s and 80`s, whereas the Nirvana sound is much more of a hybrid of distinct sounds weaved in with cleverly constructed pop melodies (its the pop melodies that hooked the masses) Also the Beatles and even Led Zeppelin are two bands that people can just put on their music and find something they`d like pretty quickly, whereas with PJ thats not really the case .
For a number years I thought PJ were a good band with a fantastic vocalist, but for me most of their stuff sounded like an unfinished jamming session in the recording studio with lyrics thrown in. More recently I listened to their whole discography and the brilliance of the band finally clicked and everything Pearl Jam fans had been telling me all these years just clicked in. Very rarely do I make a complete u-turn with a band but in this case I did and for that reason PJ are a special band to me now. Based on this logic I`d say PJ were an acquired taste, which doesn`t really qualify them for being overrated. |

I'm prepared for the character assassination that could possibly come as a result of this recommendation, but here we go:
Apparently there is a movement within deathcore that is beginning to incorporate much more technical and progressive elements in its music than the trademark mindless, knuckle dragging breakdowns for which the genre is famous. There's a number of bands on a label called Sumerian Records that all have incredible talent and sound similar to the link above and yet have their own distinct sounds. I suppose the evolution within the genre could be likened to the birth of technical death metal in the 90's. The Meshuggah influence is pretty evident here, especially in the breakdowns (which are said to be played in rhythms of pi). So take a listen if you wish and respond! |

I would take the first 2 Oasis albums over the entire Offspring discography.

Killswitch Engage (their first album is easily the best but since you like A7X you would probably like the As Daylight Dies album) As I Lay Dying (An Ocean Between Us album) |
