Carcass, yeah.. they were always reinventing themselves. "Heartwork" and "Symphony of Sickness" are my favorites from them. For Gorefest, "False" is my favorite from them.

"To Mega Therion" is still my favorite by Celtic Frost.

For older Celtic Frost, Morbid Tales is my fav. That's not to discredit the other albums, I like all their other stuff expect for Crystal Lake. Monotheist is still my fav overall though, nothing else out there sounds quite like it.

I am not sure your views on Death Metal, but Therion's first 3 albums are different from what they are doing now, "Of Darkness..." was a straight ahead Death Metal album, "Beyond Sactorum" is a Death Metal album with hints of Doom Metal, and "Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho Megas" was a Death Metal, Doom Metal and Avant-Garde Metal album...
those albums I actually enjoy from time to time... not huge on the stuff that came after, though "Lepaca Kliffoth" was decent, symphonic metal with a thrash influence. "Theli" and on is when they went really symphonic. I recommend "Beyond Sanctorum" to anybody who is curious about Death Metal and wants to get into the style. One of the best. Another one was Darkthrone's first album "Soulside Journey", their one and only Death Metal album before shifting to Black Metal.

Do you listen to Hellhammer? Their Satanic Rites demo is pretty solid and if you haven't heard it already it's well worth checking out. They're a bit more primitive compared to Celtic Frost but a key influence on black metal.

I have heard of Hellhammer, another Tom Warrior project, yes?
When it comes to death metal, I don't really listen to it much. I do recognize its importance and respect the genre very much. Bands like Atheist and Necrophagist (just for examples) are pretty untouchable in terms of technicality. Personally, I attribute my lack of a taste for death metal to the difference in generations between myself and most MB members on this forum. I didn't grow up with death metal. |
