  • Megadeth
  • Metallica
  • Pantera
  • Faith No More
  • Rise Against

And that's pretty much it. Those last two are more alternative but I threw 'em in anyways. Also, nice place you got here. Glad I signed up.
Since it sounds like you probably like your metal to be straight up rockin', here are a few to rock your socks off:

Slayer—Reign in Blood
Deströyer 666—To the Devil His Due
High on Fire—Death is this Communion
Sodom—Agent Orange

When it comes to Metal I really dig the symphonic stuff.

Lacuna Coil
Katatonia
Apocalyptica
After Forever
Eyes Set to Kill

Dimmu Borgir
Winds Of Plaque
Skyfire
Rage
Rain Fell Within
Visions of Atlantis
Therion
Rhapsody of Fire

Try some of these bands, there is a mixture of levels of Symphonic metal, there is some black, power, and death metal in there.

If you enjoy Nightwish, you should check Epica, similar
If Apocalyptica, than try another metal bands with cello - Angher, Hevein.
Maybe you may try also Haggard, Therion, Diablo Swing Orchestra.

I think you should check out,

Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse - This album is one of the greatest black metal albums of all time in my opinion and I think that's shared with plenty of people throughout the black metal world. I highly suggest it if you're into black metal.

Ancient Bards - Only have one release but its thought of very highly by power metal listeners. So I would suggest trying it out. Not sure if its your thing but you never know maybe you will dig it.

Avantasia - Another power metal band you might like that's very Symphonic.

Pathfinder - A brand new band making a lot of noise on the power metal scene.

Rhapsody of Fire - Yet another power metal band.

going on a DL spree and I'm looking for some good rock or metal. I'm lacking in one of the most popular genres.

my favorite rock bands are:

qotsa
boris
faith no more
mr bungle(FIRST album only)
incubus(circa science)
liars
muse
nirvana
television(marquee moon)
jimi hendrix

Melvins! They're a bit like QOTSA, but heavier, meaner, and sludgier. A Senile Animal or Houdini are good places to start.
