It's a list of 90's rock bands like the poster asked for and how do you know that the he knows all about Nirvana? Who cares if you don't like Midnight Oil - it's not a list for you.
I'm sorry I should really have checked with your personal tastes first I guess LOL!

Dunno but I've recently heard a band called Agnes Strange. 'Theme For A Dream' is from 1972 and it may fit the bill. Psychedelic prog?

umm.. i'm in love/lust with a girl i found on youtube about 4 years ago who likes metal but writes these amazingly melancholic instrumental guitar pieces - you can hear her metal influences in her note/chord choices; very discordant yet seems to unfold naturally.. i mean she is a ridiculously good song-writer and i don't know why she isn't more well-known except that she's pretty mysterious and disappears for years on end :S

but after all that - i can't actually tell you her name! i don't know it. on youtube she's called GirlMakesSomeNoise ... please tell me i'm not just biased cos she's so attractive?

anyway, that's almost exactly how i would describe her stuff and i've been looking for **** like it since i found it, .. i just wish she would post more stuff... i'll be eagerly awaiting other suggestions...
