Glancing at the Meshuggah thread made me remember the few songs by them that I have heard, and I think they have a really great sound. What would be a good album to start with in terms of this band?

You really can't go wrong with any of the 90's releases or Nothing, they're all classics in my book--even the debut

Either Kill 'Em All as Ducke said, or Ride the Lightning. Their two best and first, but I prefer Ride the Lightning.
