My quote was for words standing by themselves. Music I think lends words a musicallity that allows lyrics to rhyme without being as offensive.

On the topic of how good Metallica's are, I'd say they are one of those bands that would have gone lyric-less if the enviornment called for them at the time, however, they have this going for them.

Metallica was the first time in thrash where dragons and the devil took a backseat to PTSD, drug absue, and death. (the act of it, not the cartoon cahracter). Again, metallica advanced the art form.

I don't think it's accurate at all to say that thrash was ever primarily focused on "dragons and the devil". One of the defining characteristics of the genre from the get go was the fact that the lyrics had moved away from typical metal themes like that, and influenced by punk, it instead focused on grittier, more real-world subject matter and social issues.

Default Metallica; as follows,

After posting my opinion on that other thread (new metallica vs. old) i went back to my roots, back to 1983 July standing in Licorace Pizza (show some love for the pizza old timers) when the first case of Kill 'em all was opened, up with the window signs on top. I remember Mark( the Mgr.) taking the cassette and putting it in, it didn't last long over the speakers... but we listened to it every night in the back, believe dat! I listened, hit the lights got three plays, whiplash got two, serch and destroy got passed over because it is unfortunately one of the songs that terestrial radio beat into the ground. Point is, i did it, then i preview the new stuff on amazon and i think i need to retract my earlier statements, i was wrong.

I wish i was still there in my music taste, maybe i could accept it, but i've evolved(?) It reminds me of how old i am and i need stuff that makes me feel 26 again. I am ashamed to eat every word i uttered in high school, Apparently i wont be rocking to Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest or even Pink Floyd, Eagles ... "gasp!" ...everyday for the rest of my life. I've taken a break I guess, it wasn't conscious at all, I didn't even know till last night and this morning, I've changed. Mmmmmmm crow, it does a body good.
Thats why i wont reply to these Metallica threads any more, see you guys in indie and folkie, bluesyville. Consider those words eaten.

You agree that there were a bunch of thrash songs about dragons before Metallica? Can you provide some examples?

I think Chris Brown should beat up Metallica.

But they'd just go running back to him as soon as he gave them a ring.
