For the record, I've never read a positive review of that song. ever. and I'm a huge fan of their work. Quote:
There was nothing like The Black Album pre-Balck Album and just because it was mildly responsible for the universe of **** it unleashed on modern rock radio does not mean that it was bad. Truth be told if there wasn't a Black Album and a RATM S/T we likely wouldn't have had Godsmack and their ilk, but who can be sure when experimenting with nature what manner of aberations will come out?

Metallica; as follows,
Done. they've done what they can do in thier field of sound(genre) i say break up, look at what can happen when you get different puzzle pieces cut from the same patterns, what i mean is, integration means re-juvination sometimes. Look at velvet revolver, way cool and new, fresh, sexy. How about James Hetfield on vocals and the Rasputina chicks on strings with Bernard "hit maker" Purdy on drums, and the horn section from Gums and Roses, 357 was thier name, i think. just a suggestion.

I'd say that "Through the Never" is the probably the best song on the album. I like "The Unforgiven" a lot too even though it's terribly overplayed. "The God That Failed", "Holier Than Thou", "My Friend of Misery" and "The Struggle Within" are all pretty good as well. I've never for the life of me understood why so many people like "Sad but True" or why they decided to release that song as a single. It's easily one of the dullest songs they had written up to that point.

"Nothing Else Matters" is a really mediocre song but I can see why they'd release it as a single since it has "high school dance" written all over it. "Sad but True" on the other hand is just a mid-tempo snoozefest with some of James Hetfield's worst vocals and some truly uninspired drumming from Lars. I remember buying the album when it first came out and thinking of "Sad but True" as filler. I was totally shocked when they turned around and released it as a single.
