I totally get it.

Well, judging from the responses, it sounds like I should get their first 3 albums first, the only reason I don't own them already is because they're so damn expensive for a CD for whatever reason.
No. The first four. Trust me. They're all essential. Utterly essential. Give me Justice for All, or give me death. (Yes, I know it's And Justice for All, but that wouldn't be as good of a pun.)

I would go as far as to say that it's their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th album that are truly essential. I guess for me, Kill 'Em All<AJFA

Ride the lightning>Kill em all>Master of puppets>And Justice.

I still consider And Justice a great album. Half the songs were composed by Cliff Burton thats the reason i never bought another Metallica album.

After AJFA the Black album was a great disappointment.

I remember the anticipation like it was yesterday. My good friend bought it same day. I hopped on my bike and headed by for a listen. We threw it on and looked at each other like WTF is this crap. I wanted to stab my ears with hand grenades.

Its just the sort of album that appeals to conservative rock fans, the type that listen to U2, Dire Straits and Genesis. In fact it was the perfect album for the coffee-table type rock fan, polished and easy to listen to, but without upsetting the digestion

Compared to old Metallica, it isn't very good. But as a standalone rock album, it is fairly effective at what it is shooting for. Much more so than Load and Reload.

I`d take Load over the Black album any day.
