I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Question Metallica, what the hell?

Hey guys,
I'd like a bitta help here...
So I dont think Metallica are a BAD band, I just dont think they're all what they're made out to be?
What does everyone see in them?
Ride the lightening is the only album by them I moderately like, but I still wouldnt say they're worth the hype,
Just someone tell me why everyone likes them so much...

you mean aside from being the biggest and most successful of the 4 main bands widely credited and accepted with transforming metal from some outcast fringe style to something that is widely respected and recognized around the world? (this had already happened prior to the Black album - that album Led Zepplinized the band, it no longer became a matter of whether or not they were tops, but how much bigger they were than 2nd place.)

you don't need to like them, but if you can't consider their achievements without filtering them through the bias of your tastes first then your opinion on their accomplishments is worthless.

I agree it is a mystery, especially when you look at their main rivals in the 90`s, both Slayer and Pantera were far better bands and Megadeth a lot more fun etc. I suppose the appeal is James Hetfield`s voice which I don`t overly like, but I can well imagine people enjoying his dominant bark, Kirk Hammett`s a great guitarist and back in the day before his untimely demise Cliff Burton was THE BASSIST of the moment. I think Hetfield and Ulrich as leaders of the band had the vision of world dominantion and constantly did whatever they had to do to push the band in this direction, which of course meant a big compromise on their sound to appeal to the masses of non traditional metal fans, as evidenced on the Black album or adding the hard rock blues element with Load & Reload, or keeping up with modern trends such as Nu-metal on the St.Anger album.

I don`t think that their initial achievements are being brought into question as most people on here tend to have an appreciation of their work prior to the Black Album.

I have many complaints about that album, but the number one thing that bugs me is the lyrics. It sounds like he slapped out those lyrics in about 5 minutes. "I'm madly in anger with your"...wtf does that mean..."Ohh sweet amber...how sweet does it get?"...Ok, James, you just battled alcohol addiction and if you are going to put it into song I expect better lyrics than that.
