What did you think of Jason Newstead?

And I`ve been calling him John all these years
To be fair, I don`t think he`s a bad bass player as some people seem to think, but just prefer Cliff Burton and Robert Trujillo as I always liked Robert Trujillo from his Suicidal Tendencies days. Sometimes being the outsider in a band makes that band member more interesting but in Jason Newsteds`s case I didn`t think so. |

The thing with Cliff is that he was not just a good bassist, but an outstanding one before he joined Metallica. In fact Metallica were so determined to have him in that they relocated rather than demand he moved to be near them.
Here's why: When Newstead joined the band, me and my brother used to call him Jason Useless. Unfair, I know, as he did play the bass lines (and I was in a Metallica cover band back in 1988, so I know how tricky some of them are) - but he was practically blanked out of "...And Justice For All", and his bass solos were always a popular time at the bar - in my neck of the woods at least. I think the last time I saw that lineup was in 1993 at the Milton Keynes bowl. Trujillo plays the bass lines fine - I didn't hear any issues when I saw them at the O2 last year - but I wasn't blown away by anything he did. Unlike Burton, who was a joy to behold, especially at the legendary gig at the Hammersmith Odeon in September of 1986, with Anthrax in support - a mere few days before he was cruelly taken from us |

People don't like them because they went crap after the Black Album (many would argue that the Black album was the first crap album), then started hitting back at their fans for doing EXACTLY what they did when they started out - ie, sharing music.
In those days, we all swapped tapes. Now we download mp3s. No difference except scale. The bands Metallica had tapes of never made it. Why? Because no-one bought their bloddy stuff!!! Metallica had already sold gazillions when they went after sharers - they didn't need to. That makes them hypocrites, as well as purveyors of poopy music. That's why no-one likes them! Alright, Death Magnetic is pretty good, and they did charge 1980s prices for their recent gig at the O2. £5 to see Metallica is a more than amazing deal in my book. Pity the T hirts were 2008 prices... The other thing people criticise them for is sloppy musicianship - but people who make this attack always forget that they are comparing a 1980s metal band with 2000s metal bands. Lars' timing may freqtly be out (e.g. intro to "Battery"), but at the time, he was still AMAZING, IMHO. |

Gojira were awesome, LoG were annoying, Metallica were good.
Lemmy showed up near the end of the show too.
