I've tried a few times to get into them and they just don't do it for me. I could very well be missing something so I'm willing to return to them. Which album of theirs should I check out?
As per the OP I don't really pay attention to geography that much when I'm exploring music so I couldn't tell you.
Thy Catafalque's first two releases are their most clearly black metal ones, I still need to buy their early works collection because I own all their albums except those two and the other release that came with them. Since Tuno Ido Tarlat they've been much less bm focused usually, still I'll rec a couple recent TC songs.
I would recommend Ashes Dance from Sublunary Tragedies, The Sileni Sylvans and Fauns from Microcosmos, Sgurr Eilde Mor from Sgurr, and this track from his newest album.
