Yeah actually Mr. Dave makes a great point.
To be honest I'm not sure why Nickleback takes the heat it does. Everybody knows that they're whole genre is ****e, Nickleback is no worse than Puddle of Mudd or Blue October or whatever the teenagers are into these days. |

i've actually tried to get to the bottom of that 2nd comment before. it's not like the band set out to be anything besides the biggest arena rockers they could. their goal was to write hits and be famous, it's not like they were pulling a creed / scott stapp by making claims they were greater than led zeppelin and that they would make the world forget about the doors with their new album. ultimately what came out through that old discussion is that rock music is about youth rebellion. not being famous or getting the mainstream to recognize something 'better', but about creating a soundtrack for a generation of kids that makes their older siblings and parents turn up their noses and wonder WTF are you listening to. nickelback does nothing to accomplish this, but does everything to keep those older generations happy by fusing the most generic parts of led zeppelin and pearl jam into a easily digested package for those people who still think alternative' is an underground style. it also makes it easy to get radio play when you're pandering a proven product, ESPECIALLY with the way cancon laws work. they're basically betraying the core essence of rock music. which isn't about entertaining you forever, but about entertaining today's kids instead. to provide them with a unique soundtrack to their adolescence while they establish their own unique cultural and generational identity. some bands will grow old with their fans (i'm looking at you PJ) while others will try re-inventing themselves to appeal to yet another generation of kids (RHCP anyone?). although that whole thing has taken a really odd twist in the last 10 years since the net took over as the medium of choice for hearing new music. hell i remember right around the 1999/2000 mark, kids were thinking that it was 'cool' to be a corporate sellout, then again how else would you fully rebel against a generation of DIY individualists? |

He does have nice curls. I remember I was in high school writing an exam I missed after school, and my teacher was talking to another teacher about going to a nickleback concert:"they're not satanic or on drugs or anything, not too loud, they have nice songs"....that only reaffirmed my belief that they were total crap. Nickleback is a sitting duck and I usually don't bother criticizing them. Last edited by asshat; 07-13-2009 at 04:58 AM. |

I can't tell if I've posted on this already or not but Blue October and Nickelback are two of my favorite rock bands (I'm a rock addict. Sorry.). They have a legitimate different sound from a lot of other rock artists, especially these days, and they've gotten pretty far on some ****ty mainstream songs, I admit, but if you've actually listened to the full album of Foiled and Approaching Normal (Blue October) or All The Right Reasons, Silver Side Up, and The Long Road (Nickelback) then you just can't judge. I'm all for respecting opinions but only if it's educated ones. Nickelback, definitely, doesn't deserve the crap they get for people who haven't listened to a single song apart from Photograph.
And I'm just leaving this here because it's the most genius song from Blue October that I've heard (Next to Weight of The World which is just a demo/live) |

I don't like Nickelback but I also don't make fun of them. Their music is just so boring to me that I can't even irrationally hate it. They don't conjure up emotions of any kind for me.
The reason why they get picked on so much is that their songs are incredibly generic, so for a rock band that was so hyped up years ago people expected something more I guess. Their songs all sound the same to me and there's really nothing that makes them stand out or provoke discussion, which is probably why when people need to name "the worst rock band" they choose Nickleback because 99% of people aren't going to bother defending them even if they don't get angry over their music. |

Lyrically, they are pretty bland in most songs but that doesn't mean that they lack any complexity because they're not being philosophical.
I'm only defensive because I just think they're great. But hey, I like better bands. So all's good. |

If you think Nickelback are great, then you really are down in a hole.
