melodic death metal is not power metal - power metal is Helloween, Angra or Blind Guardian

I love all the In Flames I got, except for "Clayman" which is a bit repetitive

Dark Tranquility is a bit too "sweet" for me, really, and the singing is trying to be OTT evil when the subject matter isn't really that "evil" - Judas Priest's Angel of Retribution has more "evil" lyrics, really

Exactly my point!
Saying Eluveitie is a bad viking metal band is completely wrong because viking metal is a sub-genre of power metal and Eluveitie is celtic folk/melodeath.

Amon Amarth, however, are the finest viking metal band around. Very good with their lyrics and mythology. Riffs get re-used every now and then but still they are a solid band.

Yarr.. Yea, i know them... they are dressed like pirates. Stupid? No. Or maybe a bit. But they have many epic songs, like Captain Morgan's Revenge, Pirate Song (listenin right now ), Shipwrecked, Keelhauled, etc.. I think this is wrong topic... i would classify them as a folk metal. But i might be wrong.

Err.. back to the topic: Melodic death metal is one of my favourite metal genres. I calculated that about 20% of all music in my iTunes can count as a melodic death metal. Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, Kalmah, In Flames, Omnium Gatherum, Be'lakor, At the Gates are the bands that i have listened most.

They are a very good band. I am yet to get their new album and have only listened to one song from it, mainly to save the pleasure of listening to the entire album when I have the actual album.

From their latest album Surtur Rising:

From their Fate of Norms album:

"Viking Metal" is not a genre. It does not describe the music at all; at best, it describes a broad range of lyrical themes, symbols employed by the band, and otherwise how the band presents the music. It has little to do with the actual music itself.

Viking Metal is essentially a theme about Vikings.
I might be wrong there but as I understand it, the term became popular when Amon Amarth came into being.
