Default Ataxia

Ataxia is a supergroup featuring John Frusciante (RHCP) on guitar/vocals, Joe Lally (Fugazi) on bass and Josh Klinghoffer on drums. I've mentioned them a few times before and I know CA, RezZ and Kevorkian like them, but I think they deserve a thread.

Ataxia has released two albums and I'd recommend starting with their first (Automatic Writing) as it's the better one IMO... it was recorded in only 2 weeks. I really can't get enough of their sound even though I discovered them a couple of years ago. They're definitely a band which grows on you.

I'd describe them as minimalist first and foremost, but also mesmerising, visceral, intense, downbeat and slightly neurotic. Angular guitar over rumbling basslines with Frusciante howling over the top... not surprising as Public Image Ltd was apparently an influence on their first. I warn you that their music is nothing like RHCP, though that is probably a positive for some (Urban).

The Empty's Response - this is a really beautiful song, the mellowest one they've written.

The Sides - here's something with a bit more energy. I love the cathartic breaks and the dual leads in this.

Dust - this is a monstrous track.

Sounds good, I liked the third track quite a bit. The first one, well, the 'minimalistic' setting works better for me while listening to an album than a track or two alone. I'd like to hear more. "I warn you that their music is nothing like RHCP" is definitely a good thing here . I don't hate RHCP, but I wouldn't want to hear more of them either.

I like that a lot. There is enough variation to merit multiple listens and I can definitely hear the Fugazi bass sound. Would love to hear more.

Good thread. And yes your completely right in saying it sounds NOTHING like RHCP, no matter what album you put on.

And I have to agree AR 1 is much better. The guitar in the side being a big part of that reason.

Ps: You forgot to mention Chad Smith on drums for I believe both albums.

They sure sound like an interesting band. I'm a big fan of RHCP and eventhough you say they're nothing like them, I'll look them up.

Of the three songs posted Dust is the only one that really caught my interest. Its crushing yet mellow in a weird way. Do they have more stuff like it?
