Bootlegs
Hi!
I have for the past year or so been takin alot of time collecting bootlegs (audience recorded concerts etc). Stuff relased on the web by fan rather then the groups. the sound rarely can compete with the sound on "regular records but i still find it great to listen to. i find it great that fans share these on web for free among eachother (i've even started my own website were one will be able to download all my bootlegrecordings ive collected) The reason im posting this in this section is because of what i can see alot of these recordings are from rock groups and its the part of music i love more then any other I belive that the official stuff relased from artists should be paid for by everyone, but with bootlegs i think it shall remain free on the web. not to sure how the rules are on these recordings, wether they are legal/semi-legal to share or not. what do you think? |

Someone may want to clarify this because I may be wrong but as I understand it bootlegging is illegal, even though its unlikely to really be met with any serious legal action? Some bands do embrace it and even help to accomodate it. Metallica have a site dedicated to making officially licenced soundboard recordings of all their shows available for purchase but also dedicate a section of the venue to bootleggers to make their own recordings. Jackhammer recently posted a great link for the band Acid Mothers Temple (Internet Archive: Acid Mothers Temple) which again shows the willingness some bands have regarding legal distrubtion of their live shows. It's certainly something I'd be extremely careful with mind if you're thinking about uploading them in large numbers.

I should have the right to record whatever is going on around me, especially if I paid $50 for a ticket. I will acknowledge that selling such recordings could be wrong, but if it is distributed for free and is used for personal enjoyment then there is absolutely nothing wrong with bootlegs. Also are there any cases where people have been charged with crimes for distributing/owning bootlegs?

Ouch, did you get it back? I remember at a Ben Folds concert last year this security guard just about tackled this tiny little girl for taking a picture. I've never seen a more unnecessary thing in my life.

It's quite stupid because pretty much every second person in the venue will be taking a picture or doing something similar during some point of the night/ day. I got it back but it took hoursss to find out where to get it from and it was just a bitch. I was not happy. And the stupidest thing was that I took my camera to take pictures of me and my friends, not necessarily of the bands. But yeah it was ghey.

the thing about bootlegs is that they are supposed to be available for free or for trade, not to make any money out of it. since pretty much 99% of all bootlegs are not even close to the real live album quality it doesent cause them any real problem on the money part of it.
myself have pretty much bought records from all the bands i have bootlegs from. if i hear a great band on a bootleg recording i will most likely buy buy one or more albums with them, i will nerver setle with a bootleg when i could get a real show on a disc aswell. If you ask me official music - DONT DOWNLOAD, BUY REAL ALBUMS Bootlegs - WELCOME TO SHARE FOR FREE |

I've been trading bootlegs for about 6 years now, and "selling" is the big no no. I'm more into video bootlegs, my collection is mostly KISS. and there are hundreds of KISS bootlegs floating around. its a fun hobby.
