Metallica is essentially Lars's baby. Of course Hetfield has been there since the start and they both rule the roost but it really began with Lars. The guy got into music for EXACTLY the right reasons but he is a shadow of his former self when it comes to continuing the bands original ethos.

I know he and James were founding members, but that doesn't exactly mean he's been spearheading their dynamic sound.

Also, the comment was tongue-in-cheek--obviously a reference to Phil Collins.
