No doubt about Cliff Burton. But overall, it's Newstead in my opinion. Rob is great, but they just aren't Metallica without Jason Newstead.

Nah, I always thought Jason Newsted was the worst musician to have ever been involved in the band aside from Bob Rock. Pretty average bassist I think, though he did provide some great backing vocals.

He was pretty average in Metallica, but that wasn't his fault.

He does a much better job in Flotsam & Jetsam.

It's a bit difficult to compare Rob and Jason at this point, seeing as Metallica have yet to release an album with Rob. Judging from Rob's live bass solos, he can play more technically than Jason, but that's completely irrelevant. Even with a band that attempted to suppress his creativity, Jason still wrote some top-notch basslines (My Friend Of Misery, The God That Failed, etc.), and that's what matters. He was also a much, much better backup vocalist.

Agreed. So while there will never be a reunion with Burton, Newstead did great while he was in Metallica. Burton was only there shortly, due to that bus accident. Jason was key to alot of the songs, and I also agree about his backing vocals.

Technically speaking Robert Trujillo is the best bassist and of course any fan of Metallica has a spot for Cliff, but my favorite is Jason Newsted. I was very sad to hear he was leaving the band!
