Which is a huge insult to not only Kill 'em All, but thrash metal as a whole. Kill 'em All through ...And Justice were albums pioneering the new styles of thrash and speed metal, St. Anger was long drawn out Nu metal released as the genre was dying.

Yeah, I completely agree. Kill Em All is my favourite Tallica album. St Anger is by far the worst.

Not sure what the current state of evidence for this is but In My Opinion:
They are nothing alike save the production quality.

Yeah, that's what i think too.
I don't think the production of Kill em All affects the overall quality of the album. It just makes it sound more raw and thrashy to me.

St Anger sucks a**! By far the very worst they have ever done.
I thought Justice was the best.

It's kind of ironic, if you watch the DVD some kind of Monster, you can see they are over producing the album, using pro tools, and using more tracks than they need, and the overall recording quality is worse than Kill 'em All. In Kill 'em All they just played their instruments, no computers, no pro tools, none of that bulls ****, and yeah the quality is low, but it sounds raw, energetic, and metal. St. Anger sounds like Lars is smacking the crash with his head.

No it isn't. The drums just sound like shit.

Most of the riffs are great, and despite the shitty drum sound, Lars is drumming his ass off on the album. The bass could have been better, but what do you expect? Rob wasn't even in the band until after the album was recorded. It may not be Metallica's best record, but it is a step in the right direction. At least they're a metal band once again. Load and Reload were not metal albums. I like them, but they were not metal albums.

down tuned drop D
Apparently you don't play guitar. Not one song on the album is in Drop D tuning, and even if there was a song in Drop D tuning, why would it matter? The tuning does not determine the genre of the music, and it certainly does not determine whether or not the music is good.

And for Christ sake, quit expecting Master Of Puppets II every time Metallica releases an album. St. Anger is not Master Of Puppets, Ride The Lightning is not Load, Reload is not Kill 'Em All, ...And Justice For All is not Garage, Inc. Many of you 'metalheads' may not be used to bands doing this, but Metallica changes between releases. Metallica are divergent from your conventional thrash metal band. There are recognizable differences between each album.

Does St. Anger sound exactly the same as Kill 'Em All? No, but the attitude behind each album is correlative.

.

Solos are unimportant?

They're one of the most important parts of a metal song in my opinion.
I wouldn't really class St Anger as a metal album.
